Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Local dealer is setting me up with a brake controller and I am going to test drive the 171 this week, I want to make sure before I purchase.

I tow my 178 with a Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner V6 and avg 10/12 mpg. I don't have many issues with the trailer moving around behind me.

My original TV with our 2015 179 was a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the 3.2 Pentstar V6. We averaged about 16 MPG towing throughout the summer. But I can't recommend the Cherokee even though the R179 loaded is well under the new Jeep's tow rating of 4500 lbs. I was extremely happy with it until the tranny blew last month driving solo! I've since discovered that a lot of these trannys have gone south in this new model Jeep. So, after the warranty replaced the tranny, traded it in for a 2014 Ram 1500, 5.7 Hemi. I pulled the 179 on a 130 mile round trip from Cincinnati to Lexington to see what the MPG would be. 12.0.

Just to throw in one more data point. We tow our 2014 178 with an 08 4Runner Limited. Very comfortably. We just returned from a ten day trip to Florida and back (New Jersey) and this past summer did a 8,000 mile journey to The Pacific coast and back. The Pod and 4Runner have done both east and west coasts and points between. Have had no problems at all, including an "interesting" westward drive across Wyoming with 55 mph headwinds. We normally cruise about 60-65 and get 12-15 mpg depending on wind and terrain.

I also had a 2003 4Runner V6 Limited 4 speed AISIN automatic transmission. They all came standard with the tow receiver (rear cross member mounted).. There is an optional frame mounted receiver which allows slightly higher tow capacity (tow weight and tongue weight). Stock 4Runner V6 has capacity 500/5000 (Tongue/Tow). It will tow an RPod "OK" . It will NOT tow well at 65-70 mph unless it's flatland, and you will never be able to use the 4th gear. You must leave it in 3rd, or the transmission will hunt like crazy towing 3000 pounds or more. Hills at any highway speed are taking at a leisurely pace. Accept that towing several thousand pounds will be at 50-55 mph on the highway heading uphill. I replaced my 10 year old 4Runner in 2013 with a diesel SUV because of my towing experiences, distance towing, and generally it was time for a more efficient vehicle anyway. The 4Runner was still in great condition, and was practically oil changes and scheduled maintenance only. Very few mechanical issues in 10 years. Sold it to a friend, who doesn't tow, he still uses it as his daily driver.

I have a 03 4Runner with the V6 and tow package also and looking to get a 171 this week. Have you pulled in high winds or in the mountains? Do you use a WDH?
Thanks! |

Size always matters.
For fish stories, of course.
