Tow vehicle?
Coming up on spring & my tv is a Denali 6.2 liter engine. Needless to say I am not setting any MPG records towing my new 178. Getting 10.5. Looking to acquire a replacement second vehicle. What are members getting MPG wise & what vehicles are being used.
Thanks for your response in advance

10-12 mpg is pretty much the range most see, regardless of vehicle.

I tow with a 2013  Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.6 v -6 that puts out 290 horse power, depending on the wind, we average anywhere from  13.5 to 16 miles per gallon, this is carrying maybe 5 gallons of water and our clothes and kitchen stuff.
This is usually travelling out of the mountains of Vermont down to the flat lands of Massachusetts and below. We usually are driving around 55-60 mph. I am really happy with its performance

Pulling our pod with our Suburban I would get 10-11 on local trips, but on two 4 week trips I averaged 9.5-9.7.  That was with A/C in 100+ temps and many hard hauls up mountainsides.

My pre Eco-Boost F150 super crew will get 15 MPG on the flat pulling our 177 IF I stay under 60.  At 70 it drops to under 10.  I remind myself that I am on vacation and keep it slow.  The Rockies also help keep mileage down.

We towed our R-171 with a 2012 Chrysler T&C, V6, 6 speed. Horrible. Went to 2 Chrysler service managers and they said no problem. Went to 2 r-pod dealers....no worries. Hooked it up and headed for the maritimes. Way underpowered. Constant downshifting with the slightest grade. MPG was 11.5 and with a small gas tank, we had to stop every 2 hours if we could find a fuel stop. Canada doesn't have one every couple of miles. So, we traded it for a Dodge Durango V8 HEMI MDS VVT. Huge difference.

Welcome.  My experience was similar to yours with the Sienna we used before our Suburban.  Downshifting with the slightest incline (worse with a 4-speed) and gas stops every 3 hours.  Fine for local trips, but after 2 long trips (MD to ME and MD to FL) I knew we needed more before we hit the Rockies.

Tow with 2004 f150 supercab with 6.5 bed & 5.4 liter v8 & 3.73 rear end tow package. Pulled 27ft. Travel trailer (Award aerodynamic & low profile at 5000 lbs.) And got 10 to 13 mpg driving listed speed limit. Now towing the 171 pod with same TV and get same mpg. Rpod has higher profile than previous trailer. Plus- TV only gets 18 mpg by its self. The big difference between TV is when you get to the destination and unhook. The time spent sightseeing with TV. I personally like towing with a larger TV ,but my current TV is overkill. If and when l purchase the next TV it will be a p-up with a smaller v8 or v6. It would have tow package because you get heavy duty radiator, alternator & transmission cooler as well as other features. The one thing l would look to down grade is the rear end (differential). I would get a 2.73 or 3.55 . lighter weight truck, smaller more efficient engine & higher rear end would increase mpg at least during nontowing times.

My lifted 2015 4Runner with oversized tires and 4.0 V-6 will average 35 MPG pulling our 171.

Just kidding. I'm averaging about the same 10 to 15 range depending on terrain and speed. :)

One advantage of the newer 6-speed, and definitely with the 8-speed trannys, is less of a need for the low rear gear ratios, so I think you have the right idea.  You really only need it low off the line, and 1st and 2nd on the 8-speeds are very low.

True about the 8 speed transmissions. First two ratios are VERY low. I get 15mpg towing the Pod at 65mph with cruise set. If I can tolerate driving at 55mph, then it climbs to 17mpg towing. I have the TDI (diesel) version of the Touareg.

All,
To all who responded to my query my hearfelt thanks. I believe I will stick with my present TV until something better comes along based on your responses. Tongue jn cheek I was ready to research the availability of a lifted Toyota 4 runner in my area until I scrolled down to the bottom of the message.

Thanks again

I have a 03 4Runner with the V6 and tow package also and looking to get a 171 this week.  Have you pulled in high winds or in the mountains? Do you use a WDH?

Thanks!

I also had a 2003 4Runner V6 Limited  4 speed AISIN automatic transmission. They all came standard with the tow receiver (rear cross member mounted).. There is an optional frame mounted receiver which allows slightly higher tow capacity (tow weight and tongue weight).

Stock 4Runner V6 has capacity 500/5000 (Tongue/Tow). It will tow an RPod "OK" .  It will NOT tow well at 65-70 mph unless it's flatland, and you will never be able to use the 4th gear. You must leave it in 3rd, or the transmission will hunt like crazy towing 3000 pounds or more.

Hills at any highway speed are taking at a leisurely pace. Accept that towing several thousand pounds will be at 50-55 mph on the highway heading uphill.

I replaced my 10 year old 4Runner in 2013 with a diesel SUV because of my towing experiences, distance towing, and generally it was time for a more efficient vehicle anyway. The 4Runner was still in great condition, and was practically  oil changes and scheduled maintenance only. Very few mechanical issues in 10 years. Sold it to a friend, who doesn't tow, he still uses it as his daily driver.

Just to throw in one more data point. We tow our 2014 178 with an 08 4Runner Limited. Very comfortably. We just returned from a ten day trip to Florida and back (New Jersey) and this past summer did a 8,000 mile journey to The Pacific coast and back. The Pod and 4Runner have done both east and west coasts and points between. Have had no problems at all, including an "interesting" westward drive across Wyoming with 55 mph headwinds. We normally cruise about 60-65 and get 12-15 mpg depending on wind and terrain.

My original TV with our 2015 179 was a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the 3.2 Pentstar V6.  We averaged about 16 MPG towing throughout the summer.  But I can't recommend the Cherokee even though the R179 loaded is well under the new Jeep's tow rating of 4500 lbs.  I was extremely happy with it until the tranny blew last month driving solo!  I've since discovered that a lot of these trannys have gone south in this new model Jeep.  So, after the warranty replaced the tranny, traded it in for a 2014 Ram 1500, 5.7 Hemi.  I pulled the 179 on a 130 mile round trip from Cincinnati to Lexington to see what the MPG would be.  12.0.

I tow my 178 with a Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner V6 and avg 10/12 mpg. I don't have many issues with the trailer moving around behind me.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Local dealer is setting me up with a brake controller and I am going to test drive the 171 this week, I want to make sure before I purchase.

Test drive went pretty well, except for the lack of overdrive off button. Transmission jumped between overdrive and 4th (4 speed 03' 4Runner V6) and was disappointing that I could not just stay in 4th.

There was a slight rear end sway, so I plan to get a WDH. The dealer has two options, one the Equalizer (~$600) and the other a newer Husky model (~$400). Other postings have shown the Equalizer to be a good choice, has anyone had experience with the Husky version?

I was right about the 4 speed transmission. Hunting 3rd, 4th... It is not all the the transmissions fault though, it's the torque (286 ft/lb if I remember correctly). Leave it in 3rd gear so it doesn't hunt, and you have a decent 3 speed.

My bicycling pal has a 2004 SR5 4Runner, 5 speed, same 4.0 V6, and he tows a T@B trailer. Not the same as a POD in weight , BUT he cannot tow in 5th either at 65mph, and his T@B weighs UNDER 2000 pounds. So the 4Runner V6 just doesn't have tons of torque, that's all. No speed records to break when towing anyway.

When I towed with the 4Runner through Mass and Vermont, it was 60-65 in 3rd all the way (240 miles each way). If I remember, about 3100 rpm at those speeds on the flats, 10-13 MPG. Transmission temps were good, but I installed a B&M cooler inline with the transmission radiator anyway.

I have used the same Husky WDH on my last 3 trailers.  Absolutely no problems and the price is right.  I am also still using the same sway control, an inexpensive friction model, and, again, the price is right.
