One small point: Unless the Ridgeline has a different 5-speed transmission than the Pilot, both 4th and 5th gears are overdrive. The "towing" gear, D3, is about 1:1. You cannot lock the transmission in 4th, but you can lock out the overdrives by using D3.

I had to go look, you're correct. So it looks like I have a D3 passing trigger on the hand grip and a D3 gear "recommend tow" shift position (which I assumed was a D4 selector) on the console... book says only use D on level roads.

You are correct Charlie.  I have not had to lock in D3.  I find the rev's much too high.  It has kicked down there at times, but we are usually in D4.

Welcome!  Lot's of knowledgeable people here. (I'm not one of them).

oh contraire Georgia, your tow vehicle has the same Honda innards as mine... so I'm positive your knowledge of how the pair is working for you will be very valuable information!

... so from your experience, how's the Ridgeline and the 178 together?

Much better after adding E2 WDH.  It gets me there, but mostly in 4th gear, about 12 mpg.
