You are correct, but depending on the vehicle, you can access the rear window with the bikes on.

Charlie and Fred,
I think I like your Sawgman solution the best.  I have a Fastway e2, and I don't think I have enough tow bar to mount on.  This weekend I'll take out and mount the the hitch to see how much room I have, if any.  I have a Toyota Highlander, so I can't think its too different from the 4Runner.  Charlie, I'll PM you to get some of those pics.    

We are headed to Sedona for SB in March.  Last year we went to Zions and were bummed we didn't have our bikes.  Can't get comfy with hanging bikes off the back.  Other option is on the roof of the car.

For pickup trucks I found this option as well, a tailgate pad;


Not sure which one I like better. I sent a PM to Charlie for pictures too.
