Bike Carrier advice needed:

  • R Pod R 179, 1 1/4" receiver hitch, pickup has a 2" receiver.
  • I would like to find a stable (Montana roads) 2-bike carrier that I can use on both the R Pod 1 1/4" receiver when towing and also adaptable to the 2" pickup receiver when the R Pod is not hooked up.
  • I was advised not to buy a hitch adapter because it voids the bike carrier warranty. (not sure if this is true for all bike carriers)
  • Any tips or experience, much appreciated!

I doubt that it voids the bike carrier warranty.  You should research that more.  I don't believe restrictions like that are even legal (kinda like people used to believe if your car dealer didn't change your oil it would void your warranty).  Besides, if you had a problem, how could they tell it had been in an adapter?

Give some thought to carrying the bikes between the truck and the camper.

Easier on the bikes and the camper and they're already on the truck when you arrive at the CG. For everyday non camping use just leave the draw bar and carrier on the truck. The platform/basket style carrier makes it much easier to load and unload.

Thule Helium fits the bill but it's going to be north of $300.

The carriers between the Pod and truck are mounted on the A-frame of the trailer right?  Or, are you suggesting a rooftop carrier?  I am looking for a bike carrier that I can also use when the Pod is not hooked up.  I found 1 1/4" receiver carriers and might buy a 2" adapter for the truck and go with that.

Look at the picture in the link. The Swagman is a sleeve mount that slips over the 2" draw bar between the truck receiver and the ball. It is actually attached to the hitch and stays with the truck when the trailer is disconnected. It works with straight ball hitches or WDHs like the E2. I used one on my Honda Pilot/Rpod 172 combination and it worked great. Other Podders have used it in similar installation. I had pictures up on the old server but I think they're all gone now.

PS. If you want pictures PM me an email address. Posting images to this new server is too much of a PITA.  Unhappy

We received a bike carrier as part of the package when we bought our 178.  It's called "Bike Wing" see https://letsgoaero.com/bikewing-2-two-bike-rack/ .  It fits into the receiver from the spare tire mounting, it's light weight and it works quite well.  We've used it on a few trips already and quite happy with it.

Charlie advised me of the Swagman several years ago. Can't imagine using any other carrier!

Using the Swagman, I assume you have to remove the hitch to access your vehicle hatch??  I have a pick-up with bed cover so I access the tailgate even when hooked up to the trailer.....carefully.

That's correct. Fortunately, with my 4Runner the hatch window goes down so it's not much of an issue.

You are correct, but depending on the vehicle, you can access the rear window with the bikes on.

Charlie and Fred,
I think I like your Sawgman solution the best.  I have a Fastway e2, and I don't think I have enough tow bar to mount on.  This weekend I'll take out and mount the the hitch to see how much room I have, if any.  I have a Toyota Highlander, so I can't think its too different from the 4Runner.  Charlie, I'll PM you to get some of those pics.

We are headed to Sedona for SB in March.  Last year we went to Zions and were bummed we didn't have our bikes.  Can't get comfy with hanging bikes off the back.  Other option is on the roof of the car.

Thanks for the advice and help.
Jeff

For pickup trucks I found this option as well, a tailgate pad;

Not sure which one I like better. I sent a PM to Charlie for pictures too.
