Topic: US tour - southern states, 2013 Posted: 16 Jul 2013 at 1:02am |
Long 10 hour day on the road today, and we are getting ready to hit the sack so just a quick update. Made our way through central and western TX along I-10 today, then up into southern NM. We'll tour Carlsbad caverns tomorrow. Cool enough tonight that we won't be using our A/C for the first time this trip, which also means no need to crank up the genset since we are in a Walmart tonight. Last night was our first time in a truck stop. Felt safer than staying at a Walmart - I'm not worried about locals looking to mess with truckers at 2 am for fun. The truckers would kick their butts if they did and they know it!

What is the 'fridge status?
Can you put the blog address in your sigline so I don't have to keep going back and tracking it down..

Added the blog to my sig, good idea.
Still issues with the fridge. It won't stay cool going down the road on DC or gas mode. It won't cool at all in gas mode actually, even sitting still. It will cool down to 39 in AC mode. A week ago I tried wiring one of the two fans "on" permanently but that didn't help at all. Today I wired it back to normal, and pulled the burner assembly apart looking for blockages. Blew some air up the chimney and tested out the burner - it ignites with a nice blue flame and re-ignites immediately if I blow it out. I'm stumped. Obviously the ammonia cycle is working fine since it will cool down properly in AC mode. Since it has problems in the other two modes I can only guess that the control board is bad. But I can't see how that would affect the gas mode since the flame is burning normally... Sitting in Roswell, NM right now, next to an alien. Seriously. Our camping neighbor has taken an alien all around on their 7 weeks of travels this summer and it is sitting next to their camper. My wife will get a pic of it up on the blog. Loved Carlsbad Caverns today, and only had a short drive to the campground tonight. We'll spend some time tomorrow morning around town and then on to Albuquerque for 2 nights.

Try gently tapping all around the tubes on the back of the fridge.. the ammonia can sort of "set up" and not travel around well sometimes. I can't recall for sure about a 1 mode only problem, but in the vintage 'stream world, pulling the fridge and inverting it and banging it around gently a few times has restored many a fridge to proper function..

That was the recommended procedure 20 years ago. It might still be a remedy today.

P & M, I let her know, thanks!
As for the fridge, I don't think banging or inverting will do anything, since it works fine on AC mode. The ammonia absorption cycle is operating properly, or even AC mode wouldn't work. I tried DC mode again today on the road and it did worse than gas mode had been doing earlier in the day.

When you are in Albuquerque for the two days you may want to stop at Camping World out on the west side of town an check with the shop on the fridge issue, its at the top of the hill on I-40 west of the river. Goose

I was in that Camping World store a few times last month. We stayed in the campground right next door to it. If you go there, don't turn right on the access road when you leave the store. I made that mistake and had to drive many, many miles to the next access ramp to the Interstate.
