I've hinted on other threads about our big plans for this summer, I figured it was time to post the details.  Two years ago we realized we only had about a half-dozen summers left with both of our girls, with the summer after 11th grade for our oldest being the last.  The summer before she starts college I'm sure we'll have to stay local.  So, Soviet-style, we made a 5-year vacation plan.

First up was a week-long cruise which we took last summer.  Next up is three or four 3-week trips around parts of the US.  When I was a kid my family did a big loop of the US in five weeks.  That was too long in one car and we still didn't see everything we wanted to see (I wanted to see the Pacific Ocean but after coming within a day's drive we had to start heading back), plus as the principal pod driver I wouldn't want to do that much driving.  Three weeks is going to be bad enough with several all-day slogs.

My wife will be attending a conference this summer in Atlanta, so it made sense to use that as our launching point for this year's trip.  A nice perk, the travel expense we would have used to get her home will now go towards gas costs after I pick her up.  Next year she'll be in Denver so we'll probably do a loop around the major attractions in AZ, UT, etc.  The year after will probably be a northern loop (no conference that year).  Going by memory, below is our itinerary for this year.  A quick note that 1/3 of our night stops will be in Walmart parking lots (or similar, like Flying J) which adds to the adventure.  I'm mounting a generator on the front of the TV to run the A/C on these stops which I'll post about later.

  1. A day and a half with just the kids making our way to Atlanta.
  2. A day and a half in Tybee, GA with friends at the beach.
  3. A day in Pensacola, FL touring the Naval Air Museum.
  4. Two days in New Orleans.
  5. A day in Houston touring the Space Center.
  6. A day in Carlsbad Caverns, NM
  7. A half-day in Roswell, NM (passing through, might as well).
  8. A day and a half in Albuquerque, NM, visiting family and touring the Petroglyphs.
  9. A day in OK at the National Cowboy Museum.
  10. A half-day in Arkansas at the Crater of Diamonds (in the morning before it gets hot).
  11. A day at Graceland in TN.
  12. A day at Mammoth Cave National Park, KY.
  13. A day at Natural Tunnel State Park, VA.
  14. A day and a half in Whitmer, WV, visiting family.
  15. Finally a half-day at home to unpack and do laundry, then a full day of sleeping in and doing nothing before heading back to work.

This sounds fantastic!! After a vacation like that, I'm not quite sure you're going to enjoy the first day back to work. Take many photo's and enjoy making all kinds of memories :)

A quick "local" note.. If you want hook ups at Mammoth Cave, the park doesn't have them.. BUT I highly recommend "Diamond Caverns" resort. It is on the park "parkway", about 5 miles from the cave entrance.

Campground  has good amenities, 2 pools, mini and real golf, direct access to the hiking and biking trails at MCNP.

Also since it is just down the road, the National Corvette museum is nice, even if it's GM.. LOL.

Very good to know.  We found that out after making our reservation, and they don't do refunds.  We were just going to rough it that night - and hope the temps fell low enough to be comfortable with a fan or two.  I'll mention that campground to my wife, we might just eat the $17 loss at the in-park campground to have A/C.

Definitely will have a ton of pics, my wife is an avid scrapbooker and has become very good with a full-sized SLR to fill her books up.  She's done electronic scrapbooking a few times and says she may do it for this trip so she can start while we're on the road.

You have some great trips coming up, if you have one each summer for the next three or four years!  Our oldest son was working full time the summer between Junior and Senior year, and didn't want to go on vacation, and the youngest was in love, went along anyway, and made the trip miserable.  Enjoy vacation with kids while you can!

On our last big west trip, I kept a journal on my iPad. We saw and did so much during the trip that the journal really came in handy once we got home and tried to remember everything!  I then made a Shutterfly digital photo album and included the journal entries so now we can sit down and relive our fun trip whenever we want!

If you can't get it worked out, we are just over an hour north of there, not to far off your route of travel.. 30amps available anytime. We own campers BECAUSE of the need for AC here in the summer.. (well, and I am a fan of having our own "facilities" when needed)

Sounds like a great trip. I don't know when you're starting your trip (we'll be gone a week in June) but if Atlanta gets to be to much of a pain we're about 1 1/2 hours east off I20. Not really out of the way to Tybee. You're welcome to stay here. We have 30 amp service and water.

I hope google is taking you down I75 not 85. Going I20 to 441 (Madison) is only about 15 miles longer and a much prettier drive. A note about I16, there aren't to many exits with gas. Dublin and Metter are probably the best bets for gas, food and bathrooms.

From Baltimore it takes me down 95 just south of Richmond, then across 85 to Atlanta.  75 is half of the trip to Tybee Island.  I'll have to look at your scenic route.

Unless you really want to go to Atlanta you would be better off staying far away from it.  It can take hours  getting through because of the traffic.

That is true of Atlanta most of the time.  We go through there regularly when we drive from Florida to the Chicago area.  We always time it so we hit Atlanta either before or after the rush hours and normally take the west bypass.  If late at night, we drive right through the city.  Holidays might be worse, weekends not so bad.  If we are not towing, we take the HOV lane.

We live 50 miles east of Atlanta.  You should enjoy Tybee.  It is a throwback to earlier beach communities before they became dominated by high rises and condos.  Savannah is worth a few hours also.  It has the largest historical district in the US.  To film a period movie there they just have to through some dirt on the asphalt, and you've gone back in time.

I would second my fellow Georgian's recommendation about alternates to I-16.  It's a boring drive and unless you enjoy pulling the POD at 70, you can make almost as good time in other routes.  Once you leave Atlanta, Georgia is an entirely different state.

Of course no visit to Georgia would be complete without a stop in McIntosh, the current filming site and filming location for "Honey Boo-Boo", the show on TLC that has become the symbol for everyone who wants to stereotype rural Georgians.

Be safe!

Well, if I don't show up at the Hilton Sunday morning there will be problems...  if you can tell me how to get there without going into the center of the city let me know.  Cool  At least it will be Sunday morning and not a Monday afternoon.

Looking forward to Tybee and a quick trip into Savannah.  The girls and wife want to see the home of the person that started Girl Scouts so we'll be there for a few hours one morning.  But we'll spend about a day in Tybee with my best friend from college who now lives just north of Atlanta.  I spent two years about 3 hours north of Atlanta in Murfreesboro, TN.  Only made one trip south when the Dead played Atlanta one weekend.  Wasn't much of a Dead Head but some friends were.

My wife is from Savannah and we lived in Charleston for a couple of years when I was running 7-Eleven stores there.  They are alike in many ways (large historic areas) but very different in many other ways.  They are also big competitors in the battle for container freight, which has led to some interesting issues as Savannah has sort to deepen its harbor to get ready for the larger ships that will be coming as a result of the widening of the Panama Canal.

Plus, remember to bring along an electric sno cone maker that can crush ice cubes (some can only do ice pucks).  It has been fantastic in helping keep us (and Chai) cool during heatwaves without a/c both as a treat and as a swamp cooler.

thanks, all.  So far mostly good.  I forgot our 2nd set of camper keys at home, I'm having our house sitter look around.  Not in the pants I wore this morning unfortunately.  The truck is running warmer than usual (engine and tranny), I can only attribute it to the generator box up front.  It isn't blocking the vents but it still may require air flow from down low to make it into those vents.  Also the fridge was nice and cold this morning and early this afternoon, but by our 2nd pit stop it was up to 50 degrees and switching it over from gas to DC between the 2nd stop and tonight didn't change it any.  I turned it completely off for 15 minutes and now have it on AC mode since the genset is running.  Still no change so far...

TNT, my fridge did that last fall--all seemed to be working OK, but not cooling well. I had bumped the thermostat out of its mount in the lower left corner of the fridge's interior. Reseated it and all has been well---for a Dometic.

You got my hopes up for an easy fix, just looked and it is firmly in place. I keep thinking im getting whiffs of fried circuit board, cant tell if it is just the campfires around us...

Something I tried at a pit stop today, i wired one of the fans behind the fridge permanently on, i did that to our popup fridge which helped. No help here. Got up to 60 on the road and now at 48 in camp.

We are at stone mountain tonight. The storms have all been to the west but i think we will get hit soon by the sounds of it.

Now that my wife has joined the trip there are lots more pics on the blog she is writing (link on the last page I think). I forgot to mention I found my 2nd set of pod keys, somehow they made it into the center console in the truck while I was packing up. Now they are back where they belong. We are spending our 2nd night at Tybee right now. The sites are about what I expect for a high-demand campground, very close, but most are semi-wooded with shade. I was told the city bought the campground a year or so ago and is slowly upgrading all sites with full hookups. It is in a neighborhood and bordered by the city water tower and police station so it is quiet. 3 blocks to the river according to the office, and 3 long blocks to the beach. We walked to the beach today and spent a few hours there. The light house is right behind the beach but we didn't get a chance to tour it or the museum.
We would consider coming back, love the area, but with a camper it would be about a day and a half each way so it may be a while before we do.

My wife just made another blog post, but here is my 2 cents.  We spent about 11 hours on the road yesterday driving from Tybee to the Walmart just north of the Pensacola Naval Air Station.  They wanted us to park to the rear (a normal request) but I wished I had parked on the northern side instead of on the southern side.  After getting plugged in with the generator running I realized there was project housing not far away with a path that dumped out right at that corner of the lot.  I was a bit worried but said a prayer and went to bed, in the end we had an uneventful night.  We were up at 7:15 when the genset ran out of gas, 8 hours after I filled it.

The National Naval Air Museum was top notch, and we really could have spent 2 full days absorbing everything in there.  Unfortunately even though we were there on a Wednesday, the Blue Angels are currently grounded due to the budget cuts.  They practice right there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  They said 11,000 people showed up for their final practice before they stopped.  We were there right as the museum opened so we got space on one of their flight-line bus (trolley) tours.  There are several dozen aircraft in unrestored condition over there, plus you can see several in a hangar actively being restored.  Some notable items there are the only C-130 ever to take off and land on a carrier, and the only non-fighter aircraft that was in the air when everything else was grounded after 9/11.  In the museum itself there are interesting pieces like the first plane ever to cross the Atlantic (hint, it wasn't Lindbergh's), a full set of Blue Angels in formation hanging from the ceiling, and one more on the ground.  The cafe has most of the pieces from the officer's club on the Naval base we had in the Philippines until 1992.  One thing that amazed me about this museum is unlike so many others there are few barriers around the exhibits.  You walk around and under the planes the whole time and except for the ones hanging from the ceiling you are able to touch them.  The only barrier I saw was around a Lunar Excursion Module mock-up, necessary due to the lightweight foil that covers it which would be easily destroyed.  After 6+ hours my wife and the kids were done so we headed across the street to the light house since my wife loves them (I like them too).  Unfortunately a heavy storm front was rolling in so we only got a few minutes there before we were back in the car.

Several hours later we made it to New Orleans, and we'll spend the next 2 days exploring the area.

I know that LONG ride to New Orleans! We went there from Ft. Myers, FL. in March of this year!  One thing that you probably know,,,when you want a free place to stay overnight...Cracker Barrel restaurants are great!  Usually the parking lots behind the restaurant are quiet and well lit.  You also are close to a place to get a great breakfast!  Enjoy New Orleans and the rest of your trip!

Thanks, had a great time today in the swamp, and then walking up and down the streets in the French Quarter looking at the architecture.  We stopped to get some beniets (sp?) at Cafe Du Monde, and I got a bloody mary to-go from a bar near the French Market since I threw my back out this morning and I knew a good shot of alcohol would help.  Supposedly walked past Brad Pitt's place, not that we were seeking it out.  We met up with my best friend from high school who I haven't seen in years, he's now in NO with a brand new bride (of 3 weeks).  Tomorrow the plan is to tour more of NO before and after taking a cruise on a river boat on the Mississippi.  Paige, you had a much longer ride!

My wife's phone has a different voice and they named it Jessie.  When they realized mine had a different voice than my wife's they had to come up with a new name for it.  We were all getting a little slap-happy on the trip home, venturing through some back alleys on the edge of NO trying to get back to I-10.  We ended up going right by the Superdome so that was cool to see up-close.

My wife's new blog post is about to go up.  Today's adventure was the French Quarter again, but the main goal was riding the Natchez up the Mississippi while eating lunch.  After that we wandered around to more shops, stopped for a drink, etc.  Tomorrow is a fairly long day of driving to Houston.

We weren't even in Texas yet, but we struck oil.  As we were finishing up this morning, ready to leave NO for Houston, I noticed a large oil puddle under the truck.  That is not something you want to see near home let alone 1000 miles from home.  I checked the oil and it was at the lowest mark on the dipstick, so we tracked down the local Chevy dealer.  I hoped they could see us at all with no appointment, and then hoped if it was a big problem (like a seal or cracked pan) that they could do it before closing time today.  I didn't want to hang out until Monday afternoon as much as I liked New Orleans.

Major kudos to the service manager, she got a mechanic out to the parking lot for a quick diagnosis within 20 minutes and we were back on the road within 45 minutes at a cost of less than $7.  No labor cost, just 2 quarts of oil.  Apparently the oil filter was loose - 13 turns too loose.  I don't know how it wasn't squirting oil all over the place.  I can only guess that my mechanic back home didn't tighten it enough, maybe at all, when he did a full inspection and maintenance work just before we left for the trip.  We made it to Houston this evening even with a 3-hour late start (we grocery shopped and ate lunch too).  Earlier I sent a glowing review to the dealership so hopefully the service manager and mechanic get pats on the back on Monday.

I haven't finished worrying though.  Before today the oil pressure was always rock-solid on 40 psi.  I don't remember seeing it anywhere else even over the last week of hard towing.  Today on the way to the dealer and then the rest of the way here it would fluctuate between 30 and 40 while moving and would drop as low as 20 when stopped.  I looked around online and everyone says the numbers are all normal, but that isn't reassuring me much.

On to see the Houston Space Center tomorrow.  I'll check the oil level before we leave and look for an oil spot under the truck...

That was normal oil pressureon our GMC Savanna with a 305 V8.  And my buddies Avalanche was the same from new on.  I always worried too.  The service manager told me that those gauges would not be what he would want to run a mission over Iraq with.

Good to hear more confirmation.  Maybe my sender has always been stuck, and the stresses of the hard towing in 100 degree heat plus the low pressure from the loose filter has freed it up.  Saw the same numbers today - 30 to 40 while under way and 20 while stopped.  Still gives me some indigestion seeing that needle move when it never did before.  I'll get used to it.

Long 10 hour day on the road today, and we are getting ready to hit the sack so just a quick update.  Made our way through central and western TX along I-10 today, then up into southern NM.  We'll tour Carlsbad caverns tomorrow.  Cool enough tonight that we won't be using our A/C for the first time this trip, which also means no need to crank up the genset since we are in a Walmart tonight.  Last night was our first time in a truck stop.  Felt safer than staying at a Walmart - I'm not worried about locals looking to mess with truckers at 2 am for fun.  The truckers would kick their butts if they did and they know it!

2 questions..

What is the 'fridge status?

Can you put the blog address in your sigline so I don't have to keep going back and tracking it down..

LOL, stay safe, trip on.

Added the blog to my sig, good idea.

Still issues with the fridge.  It won't stay cool going down the road on DC or gas mode.  It won't cool at all in gas mode actually, even sitting still.  It will cool down to 39 in AC mode.  A week ago I tried wiring one of the two fans "on" permanently but that didn't help at all.  Today I wired it back to normal, and pulled the burner assembly apart looking for blockages.  Blew some air up the chimney and tested out the burner - it ignites with a nice blue flame and re-ignites immediately if I blow it out.  I'm stumped.  Obviously the ammonia cycle is working fine since it will cool down properly in AC mode.  Since it has problems in the other two modes I can only guess that the control board is bad.  But I can't see how that would affect the gas mode since the flame is burning normally...

Sitting in Roswell, NM right now, next to an alien.  Seriously.  Our camping neighbor has taken an alien all around on their 7 weeks of travels this summer and it is sitting next to their camper.  My wife will get a pic of it up on the blog.  Loved Carlsbad Caverns today, and only had a short drive to the campground tonight.  We'll spend some time tomorrow morning around town and then on to Albuquerque for 2 nights.

Try gently tapping all around the tubes on the back of the fridge.. the ammonia can sort of "set up" and not travel around well sometimes. I can't recall for sure about a 1 mode only problem, but in the vintage 'stream world, pulling the fridge and inverting it and banging it around gently a few times has restored many a fridge to proper function..

P & M, I let her know, thanks!

As for the fridge, I don't think banging or inverting will do anything, since it works fine on AC mode.  The ammonia absorption cycle is operating properly, or even AC mode wouldn't work.  I tried DC mode again today on the road and it did worse than gas mode had been doing earlier in the day.

When you are in Albuquerque for the two days you may want to stop at Camping World out on the west side of town an check with the shop on the fridge issue, its at the top of the hill on I-40 west of the river. Goose

I was in that Camping World store a few times last month.  We stayed in the campground right next door to it.  If you go there, don't turn right on the access road when you leave the store.  I made that mistake and had to drive many, many miles to the next access ramp to the Interstate.

I tested out DC mode last night and it turns out it is working - while sitting still.  So AC and DC are ok in-camp.  DC doesn't keep it cold on the road, and gas doesn't work at all at this point even though it has a good flame.  Won't have a chance to hit Camping World before we leave, we are having breakfast with my uncle at 8 and then on the road for about 10 hours to OK.

We went to the Petroglyphs and Pueblo Indian Museum today.  We are fortunate that the temps are so far below normal, it has made the whole trip the last few days very comfortable.  Off to bed soon.

Tried "commenting" on your blog.. doesn't seem to have gone through..

Did you end up at Diamond Caverns? Mammoth Cave, Vette Factory, Vette Museum. I would also suggest you try to do at least one stop on the Bourbon Trail.. Jim Beam is about 2 minutes off I-65, and the Bourbon Heritage Center is about 20...

ALSO: Camping World world HQ is Bowling Green.. they do have service bays there..

We've been getting to camp late the last few nights plus I'm starting to drag a bit, so I've been less active online...

Odd about the blog, we've received comments from others.  We were at Diamond Caverns RV park last night.  Got up late today and did the New Entrance tour of the cave 12:30-2:30, then walked down and into the Natural Entrance just to show the kids what it looks like.  You can actually walk in a few hundred feet before you hit the security barrier.  We did see the Vette Museum as we passed by, no time to take it in this trip (along with many other things).  We are now at Natural Tunnel State Park and will be here all day tomorrow, we scheduled it in as a bit of a R & R stop.  Next and final stop is my wife's cousin's place in WV.  That will also be a bit relaxed but there are plans to tour the big radio telescope facility in the radio-free zone and take in a steam train ride near there.

A few random comments.  First, we lost our spare tire cover somewhere in OK a few days ago.  It was always on there tightly so I do wonder if it "walked" away instead of blowing off on the highway.  Looks a bit naked back there now.

Finally had to get more propane yesterday.  We didn't start off with much from the start but showers in truck stop lots finally took it lower than I wanted.  They purged the tank in the process since I wondered if air in the tank was causing my fridge issue in gas mode - nope.  Got up to near 70 on the road yesterday even though it started off around 39 while on AC overnight.

The roads coming to the latest campground (Natural Tunnel State Park in VA) were the steepest so far.  The mpg meter got down to 2 mpg when it never went below 4 out in the Rockies.  It was also struggling at the two worst parts, I hope not a symptom of a problem.  I don't expect any struggles with over 300 hp and torque and a trailer less than 3000 pounds...

When we went to the Eastern Rally in NC, I thought about kicking the monitor over to "instant mpg" going through the Cumberland Gap on the Wilderness Road.. I decided not to because I was afraid it would make me cry.

That surprises me.  We had a Yukon and towed a 6800# travel trailer all throughout the Southwest, up and down 6-7% grades.  Other than having to shift to a lower gear every now and then, we had no problems.  I would not expect your Suburban to struggle either.  Back then, our towing average was always around 8.5 mpg.

When you were in New Mexico to bad that you did not go west on US60 at Socorro for about an hour and a half to see the Very Large Array, the ones that you see in the beginning of the movie "Contact". Really pretty neat and they have a visitor center. Goose

I can only guess the struggle was due to very high grades - I think the 2 spots I had a problem with were over 10% - and I have been running the tranny rather warm due to the generator box up front (a problem I'm going to fix before I use the box again).

We did tour Green Bank, my wife hasn't caught up on the blog posts due to being in the "national radio-free zone" around it.

Back home safe around 5 today, time to get to bed!

Some stats from this trip.  I kept notes at each fill-up of the miles traveled, gallons bought, money paid.  I'll crunch all of those numbers later to get my own measured mpg numbers per leg and the totals for the trip.  In the mean time here are the numbers from the truck's computer, including towing and side trips:

5841.6 miles total, 9.1 mpg, 643 gallons, 120 hours 46 minutes of run-time.

I believe I've solved the fridge problem when in gas mode.  Today I pulled the burner assembly out (still attached, just loose) and blew a strong blast of air on it. The flame was then much stronger. Where it wouldn't cool at all during the trip, right now after about 4 hours in gas mode it is now reading 34.5 F.  Yay!

I also opened the chimney and pulled out the diffuser, then blew air down there, but it was all clean so I'm sure that wasn't the problem.  The diffuser didn't have any carbon or dirt on it.

Doug,

Can I correctly assume the 34.5 degree reading above was in the freezer section? Running the fridge empty, on AC, and undisturbed overnight I typically see the freezer running 70 degrees F below outside ambient and the fridge section running 40 degrees  F below ambient. On high, with all lights lit, it seems to bottom out at about 43-46 degrees in the fridge section, but that may be limited by the 80 degree morning temps here in FL. This tracks through the day which means the fridge climbs to 50+ as the day warms. How does this compare with your experience? Also, I can find no difference between gas and 120 Volt performance. You?

We don't keep the freezer divider in place, but the temperature sensor was on the top shelf.  With the temperature control set to 5 it got down to 29 degrees the next morning, then I changed it to 1 and it went up to 45 when I got home from work.  Set to 3 it held in the upper 30's.  All of this time the outside temps were in the 60's and 70's.

While on our trip AC mode would hold around 39 degrees with outside temps in the 80's and 90's.  DC mode was a bit warmer in camp and would rise up to 70 degrees on the road.
