Topic: US tour - southern states, 2013 Posted: 01 Jul 2013 at 8:12am |
That is true of Atlanta most of the time. We go through there regularly when we drive from Florida to the Chicago area. We always time it so we hit Atlanta either before or after the rush hours and normally take the west bypass. If late at night, we drive right through the city. Holidays might be worse, weekends not so bad. If we are not towing, we take the HOV lane.

We live 50 miles east of Atlanta. You should enjoy Tybee. It is a throwback to earlier beach communities before they became dominated by high rises and condos. Savannah is worth a few hours also. It has the largest historical district in the US. To film a period movie there they just have to through some dirt on the asphalt, and you've gone back in time.
I would second my fellow Georgian's recommendation about alternates to I-16. It's a boring drive and unless you enjoy pulling the POD at 70, you can make almost as good time in other routes. Once you leave Atlanta, Georgia is an entirely different state.
Of course no visit to Georgia would be complete without a stop in McIntosh, the current filming site and filming location for "Honey Boo-Boo", the show on TLC that has become the symbol for everyone who wants to stereotype rural Georgians.
Be safe!

Well, if I don't show up at the Hilton Sunday morning there will be problems... if you can tell me how to get there without going into the center of the city let me know. At least it will be Sunday morning and not a Monday afternoon.
Looking forward to Tybee and a quick trip into Savannah. The girls and wife want to see the home of the person that started Girl Scouts so we'll be there for a few hours one morning. But we'll spend about a day in Tybee with my best friend from college who now lives just north of Atlanta. I spent two years about 3 hours north of Atlanta in Murfreesboro, TN. Only made one trip south when the Dead played Atlanta one weekend. Wasn't much of a Dead Head but some friends were.

You should be fine on a Sunday. I'm glad you are going to see some of Savannah. The historic district is all laid out in squares. Here is a link with directions to the Juliette Gordon Low house:

My wife is from Savannah and we lived in Charleston for a couple of years when I was running 7-Eleven stores there. They are alike in many ways (large historic areas) but very different in many other ways. They are also big competitors in the battle for container freight, which has led to some interesting issues as Savannah has sort to deepen its harbor to get ready for the larger ships that will be coming as a result of the widening of the Panama Canal.

Sounds fun! Post lots of pics ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif)
Plus, remember to bring along an electric sno cone maker that can crush ice cubes (some can only do ice pucks). It has been fantastic in helping keep us (and Chai) cool during heatwaves without a/c both as a treat and as a swamp cooler.
