The 177 might be similar to the 179. The pipe between the toilet and the tank did have a curve to it. Always make sure to use plenty of water when flushing anything but liquid to help stuff move past the offset and into the tank. I'm not sure what mechanism you are referring to. The valve isn't a straight flap. Is it a ball valve instead of just a flap?

Sometimes a bag of ice dumped in the black tank and driven around for awhile will loosen up the contents and allow the tank to be drained.

I know a few people who have tried that trick, and it honestly does not work.

It does not work. A good biological agent will do a much better job. Happy Camper is a good product. So is RV Digest-It or other biological cleaners. Chemical cleaners mask odor but do not promote break down of solids.
