Has anyone put a cargo carrier on the back of a 171 Rpod. Any issues with towing?

Forest River states a maximum of 100 lbs on the class one hitch that holds the spare tire and its bracket. You have to take into account the weight of the carrier plus cargo placed on it stay under 100 lbs.

As you research carriers and such, remember that anything hanging off the back of the camper, any camper for that matter, is subject to more vibration and jarring forces than if it were attached to a vehicle. That's why some bicycle carriers are rated for RV use and others not. Best of luck and have a great summer of camping!

You will reduce your tongue weight that could lead to towing problems causing your camper to sway more easily.

I plan on welding a 2" receiver hitch on the back instead of the little toy one on there. I do understand the weight issue as far as the tongue goes. My plan would be to load the camper with my heavy items normally reserved for the bed of my truck. Put them all forward so I offset the weight off the back. Your concerns are my concerns as far as tail heavy of course. Has anyone actually done this.

I remember on this website someone has done it but don't remember who or what model R-pod they had. When we had our r-pod 171 I thought about it and if I had a welder I probably would have.

I (actually a welder I hired)added a 2" receiver at the rear of our 179. I also added an additional cross frame member from side to side and several triangles to help stabilize the receiver. Here is a e pictures   I have used it for a bike rack for about 5 years with no problems. send me a private email through the forum and I can send you more pictures and details Vann
