Topic: Central Florida Winterizing     Posted: 16 Nov 2016 at 12:50pm |

   Hi -

We live in Tampa where historically, the lowest high temp. ever is in the mid-40's. We probably won't ever go to colder climes unless we winterize, but what do people do in this sort of climate? My feelings are that if it always gets at least 8-12 degrees above freezing during the day, do I need to winterize? I don't believe it's actually gotten below freezing in a few years.

 Thanks, -R

yea, replacing all the water lines that burst, is probably cheaper than a gallon of anti-freeze  heh.

The variant up north is"Oh no, an early freeze and I'm not winterized!"

I'm not an expert, the consensus, tho, seems to be ONE night's freeze to about 30 deg F is not going to do damage if the heater is on and water lines are dripping.

I was visiting in NC once when this happened. Temp got to about 31 deg and our outside hose froze, I hadn't turned on the heater and had no water dripping. In the morning I thought I was in big trouble but nothing happened inside. I think the residual heat of the trailer saved me, so I feel you are entirely safe in Florida as-is.

I wouldn't bother. At most I'd try and drain the lines if you expect any prolonged period of continued below freezing (sub 32F) weather. A brief period below freezing is not going to cause ice expansion in your lines, which is what the winterization is about.

OK, thanks. I just spoke with the dealer's service dep't re something else and he said he had not winterized in 6 years, and didn't know anyone around here who does. I also talked with several snowbirds and got laughed at. Apparently nobody winterizes from here south. Now, I don't know about northern Florida, I think it might freeze there more.

I agree, nothing to worry about where you are - usually.
