I'm thinking of buying a R-Dome.

Can I have a show of hands from R-Dome owners who think it was a good purchase?

I know there are alternatives but I'm only interested in knowing who is happy with their purchase of an R-Dome.

thanks!

Ooooh, this is tough, very subjective and nothing is perfect!

With reservations, I like the r-dome but it polarizes people because of its great strengths and equally great weaknesses.

The only practical solution is for you to get a less expensive stand-alone like the CLAM until you can see an r-dome for yourself 'in action' and then make up your own mind. The Pahaque side tent may also be a possibility for consideration.

Good luck!

I hope I'm not muddying the water too much with my non-vote. Our R-Dome was included with the purchase of our R-Pod, and we haven't used it at all. We certainly anticipated using it for our 2 medium-sized dogs, but alas we have yet to even pull it out of the storage bag.

I suppose that, had we paid extra for it, we might be more conscious about utilizing it. We've only been camping 5 times, so this comment isn't exactly coming from the most seasoned of R-Podders!

With the fall coming, I am curious as to whether or not anyone has success with using it as a mud-room. Weatherproofing the fabric and maintaining it seems like it could be a deal-breaker.

Absolutely get the dome. It is really the ONLY thing we miss from the Pod besides the small size. We have contemplated having one custom made for the Lance.. Really.

One of many videos on the web about erecting a R-dome.. this one happens to star... ME. LOL

We are now on our second rpod and our second rdome. We love it and would recommend using it. After you put it up twice you will love it. The first time should be in your yard. It is very versatile and will stay up in a storm.

I will point out.. the whole.. "never used it but give it a down vote" bothers me.. but...

Yeah it works great as a mudroom, or a screened dining area or an enclosed space for changing clothes, as a spot of shade with sides rolled up, in cool weather, setting a small heater out there makes for a great sitting out area.. etc etc. Some domers have made clear vinyl "windows", to velcro over the screen windows, and I have played some great games of dominoes in those domes when it was freezing out.

As far as maintaining it.. we never sealed it, or waterproofed it. We did twice, set it up at home, in the yard and wash it. Because we were set up under trees that were leaking gallons of sticky sap. In fact, without the dome, the whole area in front of the Pod would have been a miserable place to be on one of those campouts.

Our used Pod came with both an R-Dome and the eyebrow shade.  We've used the latter over the last 2 years, but never the dome.  We've just never needed it.  I did set it up once and it's really nice.  Some day, I suppose, while we're camping with grand kids we may set it up if the weather is wet or something.

Our r-dome came included with our 2011 model 177.  The first year I never used it; hey that is why we got a travel trailer, no messin' around with a tent.  However, the second year we saw one attached to a similar 177 like ours and I thought, hmm, this is a pretty neat setup so when we got home we put it up, took about 20 minutes the first time and fell in love with it.  Now, over 7 years later we have used it a lot, and usually put it up if we are staying put for 2 days or more as I can put it up by myself in 15 minutes, not a big deal.  This thing has been in snow, hail, wind storms that were over 50 mph, and that was the only time we had a small bit of damage as we had a tear about 3 inches long along the keder railing.  My DW fixed it in a jiffy and it held up very well.  I guess the only thing I don't like about it is the color, maize and blue!  Being a green and white Spartan, I had to swallow my pride and look beyond the colors and look at the functionality of the dome.  Furpod has listed a few of the reasons dome owner like it, so I won't repeat what has already been stated.  For us it is a  +++++++++++++++++++ addition to our 177.

We used our dome twice before I gave it away. To me it was an extension of a tent and it rarely fit well on the improved sites we stayed in. I certainly understand that some people are big fans, but it was not my cup of tea. I recommend if you can, get it and try it, make up your own mind.

Forgot to mention, the one thing that was chintzy and was replaced were the stakes that had the strength of colby cheese when pounded into the ground and they easily pulled out even with moderate winds.  Replaced with a beefier and longer stake.

I'll pretty much echo everything furpod says. We would never leave home without the dome. With a nice floor (we use a Carefree of Colorado floor), it's a fabulous addition and with practice, sets up in 10 minutes or less. I fabricated a skirt and wheel cover which makes it even more cozy. This is our fifth season with the dome and it's still going strong.

I also have a Kelty Noah (16x16) tarp and a recent purchase of a Clam Escape. For ease of deployment, the Clam is, hands down, the most remarkably easiest shelter. Really, really does take less than a minute to deploy. Great for a quick stop when setup and breakdown of dome is inconvenient and we want the extra space.  With optional side panels it's quite a nice private and comfortable room. I'm still working on a way to snuggle it up to the dome for a theater or man-cave addition!

The Kelty tarp is fun to play with and a good picnic table cover when space and trees permit. I suggest you play with different configurations in your backyard before going camping - unless you are not easily embarrassed. I have tried using it as a pod awing with very limited success. I can setup the dome so fast, it really doesn't make sense but I always bring it along because it's just such a small package.

Just yesterday, I wrote to PahaQue after seeing this:

https://pahaquecustom.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=124&zenid=3cfcf8884506f7719e51ece51341f3c3 - https://pahaquecustom.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=124&zenid=3cfcf8884506f7719e51ece51341f3c3

It's really the best commercial awning design I have seen yet for a shape similar to the pod. I asked if they were working on a pod version. The answer I got:
Hi Fred,

Yes, actually. It's already being tested and worked on. Right now we do not have an estimate on the release but it will be soon.

Jason Rogers
PahaQue Customer Service

I'm prolly going to get that too! Bottom line, all of these have their place and I can see using any one or two or three in different circumstances.

If I only had one choice. It would be the dome.

I'm not going to vote against the R-dome because we really wanted that with our new RPod.

However, we were very pleasantly surprised at how functional and easy the Thule awning is.  I honestly thought I would regret not getting the R-dome but for setting up and packing up quickly and still have a functional dry area during a rain storm, the awning does a great job.

Our R-dome came with our trailer, so we didn't have a "cost".  We set it up in the driveway the first time without instructions, and it was pretty easy.  We haven't used it yet in the field.

I think it will be great when boondocking for extended periods.  At first, we set a threshold of more than 1 night.  But now I think it should be more than 3 nights, i.e. more than a weekend.  On short trips we're away from the pod so much that it doesn't seem worth it to set the dome up.  It's just my wife and I though.  I think with a bigger crew, the threshold would go down.

It doesn't seem useful to us in developed (dense) campgrounds - just too big.

For us, it's definitely worth the cost ($0).  If we had to buy it separately, not so sure.  The http://stores.clamoutdoors.com/quick-set-by-clam/screens.html - Clam is attractive at that price, or even a commercial EZ-up like we have, with walls and screens.

We are on our 7th year with a 177. Would never leave home without the rdome. Great for rainy days to set in and still be able to look outside, read a book etc. At night, read a book with a light on and look at all the folks in their tt's with the doors closed because the bugs are to bad... LOVE our dome.

Thanks for all the votes!   Keep them coming......

I currently use an REI tarp (I made keder rail loops) and poles which kind of works as an awning but flaps too much in the wind.....and then there's the bug issue.

As usual, this forum is a gem.

We went with the R-dome. To me it has much more going for it than an awning.
We have not had ours up yet, there just is not room in our driveway.

Awnings don't stop bugs.  Give you no privacy if/when you want it.

However, for one/two day stops one might not want to bother with the Dome.

So for that reason I bought slides from a sail shop that fit the keder rail, and a 18x10 heavy duty tarp from Harbor Freight. So we can go either way, quickly and easily.

But we expect and intend to use the Dome as well. Multiple tools in the box is my philosophy.
The more tools the more options you have.

You are correct.. my bad.. But I think, (and hope) that when you get a chance to use it, you find how versatile it is.

Dome is why we bought Rpod realizing it gets small inside camper. Negotiated for free from dealer, whats not to like about that?

More than doubles living space and we are outdoors all the time when camping and only sleep in fiberglass box. So versatile too. Can have sides up for clear view. Screens down if buggy, and completely zipped during unstable weather. Recently spent entire day under Dome while 7 inches of rain fell in Catskills. Entire outdoor living room stayed dry while the awning people were holed up in their box all day and spent next day drying their rug.

Several steps or mods we had to make. 1. Crimped keder rail slightly from one to other to make c channel tighter so Dome can't fall out. 2. Replaced cheap stakes with real camping stakes that stay secured in solid ground and make certain to stake down all the black loops. 3. Replace suction cups with heavy duty ones. 4. Put weights on black flaps on exterior bottom. We just use rocks from campsite, but other use gallon water jugs or other weights.

Dome becomes playpen for kids and pets and deters interest when away from Camp (zipped down). On year three and have never waterproofed or seam sealed. As long at tension tight on upper pools so no water pools, it never leaks. Stepladder crucial to feed Dome in track and to extend upper poles real tight. Have even cooled or heated Dome to take edge off, by leaving Pod door open.

It is wonderful.

I'm a "dome-a-holic. I use that thing everytime i go out. so enjoyable sitting outside in rainstorms so carefree.  I like it so much, I just bought a clam pavilion. The pavilion is almost as good as the dome, but doesn't attach to the keder rail. It's 12 1/2 feet across and has zip up rain flies on all 6 sides.  It's great as a second outdoor bug free space, or if there is an obstruction preventing the dome from being set up.

My first RDome experience wasn't so good.

I called a dealer in Missoula and found a green color RDome for a good price.  I made sure that it would fit my 2017.5 blue 177.  They assured me it was the right one several times.  So, as I went through Missoula on my way to my campspot, I stopped in and picked it up.

Got to my campsite and began setting up the RDome.  I slid the plastic part into the top rail about half way and it all fell out.  That's when I noticed the plastic part diameter was much smaller than the rail diameter.

So, it was NOT the right one for my Pod.  I called the dealer and they said just bring it back for a refund.

I've since read that the top rail diameter was changed from smaller to larger.  When did this occur?  I'd like to know so I can find the correct RDome for my Pod.

We have had our 171 for 6 years, and one of the big reasons we bought it was because of the dome. We love the extra living space that protects us from the weather, and it only takes us 10-15 minutes to setup and take down while onsite. We did learn the hard way 2 years ago not to leave it up in 50 mph wind storms as our original dome was destroyed by one, and we immediately purchased another to replace it.

As for the question from "geewizard" on when the top rail change was, it was 2012-13 model year depending on model and eastern/western designation. If you call Forest River they will tell you exactly based on your make/model/year which one you have.

My rDome came with my rPod purchase deal, and drop shipped from FR. Our Dome would fall out of keder rail at times. Simple fix was to take vice grips and slightly crimp C Channel from one end to other permanently and now voila, works great. Perhaps this will work for you?
