I am the proud owner of a 2017 R pod 171. Tow vehicle is a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country. The only thing I have towed is my van behind a 31' Winnebago and that is not comparable to this. I picked it up in Michigan and towed it back to Virginia. The wind was wicked and to tell you the truth, I was scared. Fooled me, the 171 tows as if it were part of the van. i would be interested in hearing how other comparable combinations tow and problems experienced.

I am sure you will hear from Leo who tows a 179 with his '13 Town and Country, never hear a complaint from him. We currently tow our 177 with a '13 Explorer 2WD and have zero problems. Before that we towed the same 177 with an '08 Explorer and had no problems with that either. Have been west 3x going twice to RMNP and then once to Glacier, took US 2 from MI all the way to MT, a great trip going through a lot of small towns on the way, not having to stress on the interstates where everyone likes going 70 or 80 +. Gone through the Smoky Mtns. as well, not near the difficulty as going through the Rockies. Best tests were the cross-winds in the midwest, Dakotas, Kansas, Iowa, at times 35 mph and above, with the anti-sway bar, we were good. I know many here wouldn't travel without a WDH, but we have been ok without. Maybe a different vehicle would warrant it, can only speak from our experiences with our two Explorers.

i am signing on a r-pod r172 saturday. I see alot of tow concerns talked about here. I am going to pull my 172 with my 2014 subaru outback. it is rated to tow 2700 pounds. I towed a 1500 pound pop up with my crosstrek, that is rated at 1500 pounds, with cargo, i was close to 1800, never an issue. when i went to lake george new york, i had a few hills i couldnt get above 45 mph, but i was on back roads. The 172 is 2120 pounds, and the outback is more powerful. i anticipate no issues, but, if there is, i'll get what i need to pull it.

Welcome. My vote is to go with a WDH that includes sway control. Especially when towing with a minivan since the suspension is softer, for ride comfort (before my Suburban I towed with a Sienna and a Venture). I towed my pod for a while w/o a WDH with our Sienna and the ride comfort was much better once I added it - it works as an additional suspension system. Not to mention the whole point of a WDH, which is to apply the original design weight on your front wheels, which do 80% of your braking and all of your steering...

I am going to be using the distribution hitch as well, but, why the concern about front wheel braking? the pod has brakes too, should not add ant strain to the vehicle braking system, i would think

Welcome to the group! Congrats on your 171. We started with a 2010 171 and loved it. We then moved up to the 179. We are towing back from a 5 week stay on Cape Hatteras . We have a 2013 Grand Caravan an have towed up and down the east coast am really happy with how our van tows.
