To mount my shelf, (curb side, over the front window on my 171 - a handy place for keys, pocket change and the dog's leash) I used molly bolts:

As you said, its very important to pay attention to wall thickness. I chose 1 1/2" molly bolts (I could only find drive bolts, so I snipped off the points just in case) so that there was no danger I'd poke through the r-pod's outer skin. I also made sure that the "wings" on my molly bolts would snug-up effectively against the 1/8" thick luan.
Installation was a simple procedure of measuring, drilling a pilot hole, inserting the molly bolt and tightening the screw.
But, I'd hesitate to hang anything heavy from molly bolts alone. The luan itself is tacked to the studs with rather tiny staples, and I'd be concerned that something heavy combined with swaying/weight shift while the r-pod is being towed might pull the luan loose from the studs.
