Is the water heater switch supposed to light up when turned on like the water pump switch?
Mine does't. I have only used 110v so far but I did notice the 12v/propane switch didn't light up when I was checking stuff out. I haven't had time to delve into it but will be needing the propane side this weekend.

The WH light will come on when you turn the switch on if the burner is needed. If it comes on it should go out within 15 seconds, indicating the burner has ignited. If it stays on, indicating no ignition, recycle it by turning off and back on until it goes out and stays out. Make sure the gas line has been bled of air.

That's my point... The light NEVER comes on.

If the WH is cold the light should come on momentarily when you turn the switch on. If it doesn't check for a blown fuse. If the WH is cold you should be able to hear the burner ignite and burn if you stand outside by the WH. If not, look for trouble. From what you describe I'd look for lack of 12V (fuse).

The water heater light only comes on if there is a problem igniting the burner.  Otherwise, it'll stay off.

As CharlieM said above, you will see the light for a few seconds as the burner is lighting (gas on, sparker sparking, but burner not yet ignited), it will turn off when the burner has lit.

One other thing to check: If the fuses are good and still no joy, check the thermal limit switches. On the WH there are two buttons to reset the thermal protectors, one for 120V and one for gas. Push both in to reset.

You said in the original post you've been using the electric element. If you tried turning on the propane mode when your water was already hot, you wouldn't see that light come on.
