Topic: Bike Rack Posted: 06 Apr 2015 at 12:37pm |
Does anyone have a recommendation for a a bike rack that attaches to the R-POD 182G rear trailer hitch? It will need to support 3 bikes.

That hitch is only there to support the spare tire or a 2 bike bike rack. For 3 bikes you'd need to find a different solution.

I spent a lot of time researching the subject of bike racks on the rpod. I have a 2015 178.
The bike rack Forest River sells is the same one you can get at Walmart for $80 and I think it is not worth even that amount of money. Spent time looking at Yakima and Thule racks and they are well made, the one I really liked was $400 but I was willing to spend the money to get s/thing that was very well built.
However, after looking at the small hitch on the trailer before I would trust that to carry bikes it would take a good welding shop to reinforce the hitch brakets, etc. Even then I don't know if I would trust it and I think it would void the warranty doing such modifications and I would have to carry the spare in my truck bed.
I was about to give up until I talked to my rpod dealer (who did not recommend putting a bike rack in the rear of an rpod). They are also a Lance dealer and had installed bike racks in the front of the trailer. They had done about a dozen or so for customers who really liked them. They had never installed one on the front of an rod but felt the rack was very adjustable and would work on a rpod.
Well, after talking to the dealer and reviewing the rack website I pulled the trigger and ordered one that will carry our two bikes (they make ones to carry more than two). They are not cheap ($500) but the Yakima I liked was $400 and I would have to modify the pod frame to beef up the hitch which would cost more money and I was not willing to do that.
I don't have any pictures of the installation but you can go on the website for the racks and get the idea of what they look like. I have to say they are extremely well made and I am more than happy with how it turned out. My RV dealer is also happy as they sell a lot of rpods and now have a real workable solution to bike racks for pods.
The website for the racks is: WWW.Arvika.ca (they are a Canadian company)

Neat, however, mine goes in the front of the pod and holds two bikes. This way don't have to remove the spare tire. Chiman

Thanks Doug,
Now I see it. Similar to mine although I think his is an earlier model. The mounting brackets look different but same idea of having the bikes up front and they rest in a channel as you can see and are held by an arm for each bike. They also come with a lock for the arm.
I will try and figure out how to post a picture of mine tomorrow

Anyone have pics of a dual receiver bike mount? I see the dual receivers cost around $50 but wondering about interference problems when making turns between the bikes and the tongue jack.

If you're using a WDH with extended shank or a ball mount with room, this worked well for us. The bike rack is from Swagman.
