Agree with Techntrek. I have AT&T also. Worked like a charm.

I've had great coverage with AT&T all over the US, we just use the hotspot feature on our phones. At home it is the only way we can get internet service.
If you have a "smart phone" you most likely can use it as a hotspot. I know with AT&T they allow phone hotspot use above a certain data plan size (10 GB I think?) so I'm sure you can find out the minimum on Verizon's website w/o having to call. I know what you mean about not wanting to get sucked into a 45 minute call, I always dread having to call AT&T!

I didn't know Millenicom was gone, their website is still active. Good to know. Yeah, I've been doing some more looking...Verizon has such superior coverage and strength I may just have to suck it up and deal with them.

I did a xcountry trip last fall. I got by just fine with campground wifi and using my phone as a personal hotspot when I couldn't. No problems and no extra fees/hassle.
Good luck! jan The Podyssey

Unfortunately, now that Millenicom is gone, the options aren't great. But, check out www.rvmobileinternet.com for some choices and opinions. As a Canadian who travels frequently to the US, I get by with T-Mobile. But, frankly, service outside major cities is terrible to non-existent. And, you won't want to hear this, but Verizon is probably your best choice for rural coverage and speeds.

We will be taking our 'Pod from Oregon to Kentucky later this year (woo-hoo!) and I'll need internet access along the way. I have an old Verizon jetpack that's not been used in a while that I could get reactivated, but I thought I'd ask this group about it first. Looks like it would be around $150-$200 to use Verizon for a month, including fees and such. Honestly, I'd rather do almost anything than deal with a long phone-tree-laden-phone call to Verizon to get it set up. :)
Any suggestions on services to use or avoid? I'll only need it for a month or two at the most. Thanks all! |
