Has anybody ever needed an adapter for 50 amp shore power because a 30 amp connection was not available? I realize this is a very elementary question, but I dunno because I have been tent camping for the last 14 years.

My experience over the years has been that 20 and 30 amp service are considered standard and 50 amp is " premium" at most campgrounds. All I carry is a 20 to 30 amp adapter and I can't remember the last time I have used it except at home.

I've encountered several instances in the last 15 years where a 50-30 adapter was necessary. One campground only had a 50 amp connection at the site. Another near Graceland had the 30 amp outlet installed incorrectly so it was physically impossible to plug into it. I've also found 30 amp outlets with bad connections, or wired wrong, or physically were broken and then I've used the 50 amp outlet instead. They tend to get less use so they are always in good shape - and unlike the 15 or 20 amp outlet the 50 amp outlet supplies more than enough power to still run everything normally in the pod (no load management needed).
Do you need it often, no. 99% of the time you'll be fine, but you will eventually run into a situation where you'll wish you had it. Get a 50-30, 30-15, and a 50 foot 30 amp camper extension cord.

Up until a month ago, I would have said "never in the last 10 years have I needed a 50-to-30 adapter." A month ago, I pulled into an unmanned campground at 11 at night, found an empty site, backed in, pulled out the extension cord... and for the first time ever, I ran across a power post with only 50 amp and 15 amp plugs; 30 amp plugs no where in sight. So, I pulled out a 15 amp adapter from my toolbox and plugged in. I was only there until sunrise, so it wasn't a big deal. That incident didn't convince me to run out an buy an adapter. But, if I run across a compact one at an RV show this winter, I'll probably pick one up.

Have used mine when the 30 amp has issues, or is all chewed up.
Sometimes a 30 amp gets used more than the 50 at a pedestal and it shows its wear and tear more quickly!

I just bought a 30 to 50 because the rv park I just pulled into only had 50. Bought one at Home Depot for about$17.00. I have only had my 179 for 7 months and needed one. So get one so you won't have to scurry around in the dark trying to get power!!!
