I check inside the lug nuts, as close to the center of the wheel as I can.  And I check the tire tread too, figuring if the pressure is low it will be warmer than the other tire.  As I said, it's all relative.  If the hubs are both close to the same temperature and anywhere below 140° they are either okay or they are both failing, which is highly unlikely.

At every stop you should get into the habit of checking the tires and hubs by just placing the back of your hand on the tire and close to the center of the wheel by the lug nuts. After a few stops you will know the expected temp of the wheels and hubs, if at any time you cannot place your hand on a hub and keep it there you have a problem that should be addressed right away.
Just made 3 trips from KC to central AZ. with 3 different trailers and the wheels and hubs ran cool on all three feeling about the same temp through all of the trips. Goose

I agree -- the hand method is sufficient.  Laser guns are more fun.

janice, that is what i recently asked about; solutions to the air breaches along the bottom of the slide (i have a 177 as well).  it's not bad, but you can see obviouos light coming thru which would allow cold air to enter.  i was just looking for thoughts on what to use to seal this when stopped and camping.  hogone

I do the back-of-the-hand test at rest stops, so I can't give you a number.  I touch the tire and hub and if I can keep the back of my hand pressed against them then I know it is ok.

Edit:  I see Goose posted the same method above.  Easy and cheap!

I can see this is something I need to worry about during every trip.

Don't worry too much.  As long as you check your tire pressure before each trip, and get your bearings lubricated once a year (or every 2-3 years if you only do short trips), you'll be fine.

You could have your pod at 110deg and your water can still freeze.   The water tank and supply line is OUTSIDE under the pod.   I suspect your friends Casita has all that INSIDE, where it is heated.

The "back of the hand"s have it.  I'll add it to my must-do list for each trip.    Thank you all so much.
