Having sold our class C Toyota Itasca, we ready to try tting in our Pod behind 2005 Jeep Liberty Diesel. We pick up our 178 Sept. 16 from Couch's. I'm sure I'll have many questions and we are both reading both R-Pod forums thoroughly.
Today's question:  Couch's offers "Coach Coverage" and I'm asking for details. What kind of "roadside assistance" etc. did you all have or get when you went with the R-Pod?  We have Good Sam's now.  Anyone familiar with Couch's Protection Plans?

When I bought my r-pod (five years ago), Forest River offered a second year of warranty for a nominal amount ($150-$200?).  I'd highly recommend it, if its still available, as its relatively hassle-free tip-to-tail coverage and dealers are used to making claims through them.  You'll also find that the appliance manufacturers also offer extended warranties; you may want to look at them as well.

Personally, most of the bugs were worked out of my r-pod in the first three months - so they were all covered under the included one-year factory warranty.  Now, in year 5, I did have to replace the A/C (and, honestly, it was still working - albeit just adequately - and it could have waited a year), which cost close to $1000.  But, apart from that things have been very trouble free.

You'll have to judge third-party warranties for yourself.  Paying for repairs isn't dirt-cheap, but they're not horribly expensive either.  Those add-on plans from dealers do get very expensive tho.  Count on repair costs between $800-$1400 per appliance.

As far as roadside, CoachNet was included with the standard and extended Forest River warranties, so you won't have to make an immediate decision.  Over the years, I've had Good Sam's and CAA (AAA's Canadian incarnation) as well - each has their minor +/-, but in the end, they'll all come and fix a flat or tow your trailer to a nearby dealership, which is generally all you desperately need anyway.  For the most part, services are contracted out and the same guy with the same truck will come out to help regardless.  Personally, I've stayed with CAA as I get a bit of a discount on my trailer insurance through them and they cover roadside for my motorcycle (which has been far more prone to breaking down lately) for the same price.

Having just bought our r-pod 171 from Couch's I can tell you that we were given  Free a 1 year roadside assistance with the purchase.  It covers flat tire changes, towing, mobile mechanic, RV technical support, lock-out service, fuel delivery, jump-starts, and service appointment. The road side assistance website is http://www.coach-net.com if you want to look at it in more detail.

Outbound, since I'm now on year 5 as well, what do I need to start worrying about with our A/C?

techntrek, to tell the truth, my A/C didn't work that well to begin with.  It'd freeze up on a regular basis and it wouldn't cool down below 75 F.  I had the thermostat replaced under warranty, as well as a full drain-n-replace of the refrigerant.  But, up here we only get 2-3 nights a year where the heat/humidity is bad enough that A/C is really needed (we get several dozen days where A/C is needed, but I tend not to spend daylight hours in the trailer, so its a moot point), so I just lived with it.  Honestly, my A/C was a lemon.

This year, it was definitely time to top-up the refrigerant, but I said no - replace the whole damn thing.  I could have just done the top-up and carried on just fine, but I plan on selling the r-pod to a friend in two or three years (its almost time for me to move to a 34' airstream) and I didn't want to pass-on problems.

Basically, I suggest just the regular maintenance that you're already doing - pop the exterior cover off and clean out the coils once or twice a year (hopefully, you won't find hornets, like I did last year), clean the interior screens bi-monthly, and when its cooling ability slacks off, top up the refrigerant.

Thanks.  My heat strip would freeze up, removing it solved that problem.  Which model did you replace yours with?  My wife loves Airstreams and is dieing to get one, I can't justify the premium price at the current time.  Long-term we want to full-time half the year so I'm saving my pennies for that big upgrade.  Either a full sized 5er or a diesel pusher - if we're living in it, I want elbow room.  Between now and then I'll consider something up to the mid-20's for touring if the right offer comes along.

My dealer had an identical Dometic in stock; it had been sitting in their storeroom (new) for two years and they cut me a deal.  I had them price a Coleman Polar Cub (9,200 BTUs), but by the time it was brought over the border, it'd cost me almost $1200 (plus installation and taxes).  For $970 installed and taxes in, I got the Dometic.  I could have installed it myself, but work was really busy and there wasn't much time between camping trips to get it done.

Airstream-wise, yeah, its going to be a lot of money.  But, like you, I'll plan on full-timing a good part of the year in it and I want to be comfortable.  Retirement isn't imminent, but its not that far off either.  I'll buy a used Airstream - probably 15-20 years old.  I'll strip the interior to the bones, closed-cell foam insulate it for Canadian winters (I plan on taking annual trips to the Rockies ski), likely have to replace most of the appliances and mechanicals, and basically do a full tip-to-tail renovation with an eye to keeping it light (starting with no tile floors or solid-surface countertops).  It'll be a lot of work and I want to spread it out over 18 months or so.
