I want to install a 12V outlet above the sink on my 171.    I hate that the DVD player is 110 only.    I want to be able to install a 12V outlet so I can put a small inverter in OR to directly power a radio and ditch the TV system.   We always boon dock so the television is a moot point for us a Radio/MP3 player with built in speakers would be better for us.


The question is how to get power up there?

Not a problem, pod racer.  There should be a spare 12v fused circuit on the converter box that you can tap into.  The box is easy to access under the street side dinette seat.  You can run the wires into the cabinet and up and out through the back of the counter top or up along side the cabinet and put a 12v outlet on the wall.  I mounted a12v outlet right at the end of the 1x table support for the same purpose.  Wiring is quite simple and easy to access the pod.  You need a square drive bit to remove screws to access the wire bundles behind the little dividers FR puts in.

Just a thought, but my combination entertainment system is mounted above the countertop.  In the overhead cabinet above the countertop are the coax cable connections and the switch for the antenna.  If yours is set up the same way, tap into the switch which feeds 12 VDC up to the antenna.
This will work on a 173, maybe your 171.

Do you have any pictures of this connection for the antenna?   How much current is the antenna power feed line rated for?

I have some 12v outlets installed by the pump power switch and whatnot on the lower cabinet face.   I really want to get a permanent outlet setup up top however.

I agree that the easiest solution on the 171 is the 12 volt connection that powers the television amp.  Look in the cabinet above the sink.

Also Agree 12v for antenna amp above stove is best place to hook up 12v plug. Should be able to run a 75watt inverter for TV that is only a 6 amp draw.

Before i get carried away and start splicing.


1.  there are two power cables.  A Red and a Red/Black.  I assume the red/black is ground but want to verify.

2.  the power feed line is already fuse protected correct?   How many amps is the fuse rated for in the power panel?

3.  IF i were to try to use the antenna amp and was running a 75watt amp would this pose an overdraw issue?

Easiest way to verify #1 is a volt meter.  Yes, it is fuse protected but you'll have to find the fuse for that circuit to find out what amperage.  Same for question #3, that will depend on the rating of the fuse.
