Topic: Battery Overcharging? Posted: 26 Jun 2013 at 12:54am |
Just wondering..Is there a problem with overcharging a fully charged battery while traveling connected to the r pod with a properly wired bargman connector? Assuming that the battery is fully charged and there is no other load on the system, wouldn't the tow vehicle alternator continue to provide 14 Volts plus or minus to the fully charged battery. It is my understanding that it is not good for the battery and will shorten battery life.

I have never thought of this but When I travel I run the fridge on 12v so maybe that draws the battery down enough that it does not overcharge.

Not too mechanical, but don't cars still have a regulator that senses when the battery is charged, and then "idles" the alternator. Where is dsmiths when you need him. He is the man on questions such as these. Safe Travels.

Yep I just looked it up and the Voltage Regulator on the car controls the charging voltage of the alternator.

True on older vehicles. On newer vehicles the computer monitors multiple factors and sets the output of the alternator itself. Same end-result but done more intelligently.
