While camping I foolishly did not check our propane, and this morning we had a very lukewarm shower with only the electric heating element to heat the water. Fortunately, propane is available locally. Evidently the lukewarm water is just that, and I was wondering how long the hot water takes to recover with only the electric element to heat it. I have added checking the propane before every trip. Brrrr. Safe Travels.

Can't say that we have ever used the water heater on propane other than to bleed the air from the line. We have always used the water heater on electric and I turn it on at the breaker when breakfast is being cooked up and by the time we are done eating the water is VERY hot. It really does not take that long. Goose

took 30 minutes at most to produce water hot enough for a shower over the weekend.

Are you sure your bypass valves are set correctly? Every time someone mentions lukewarm water, or a burst of hot then back to cold, the valves aren't set right.
Recovery time is only a little longer on electric vs. propane and neither takes that long as Goose said. If you use both modes you get a very fast recovery time, useful for multiple people that need a shower right after the other.
The thermostat temps aren't much different between the modes, not enough that you can feel the difference - in other words, both are hot. The electric mode is set a little lower to maintain the temperature so if you have both on you'll only use propane when you are actually using hot water.

Valves are in proper position as we have had hot water with propane. Seems to me, that possibly our electric element has failed for whatever reason. I have refilled the propane bottles and after lighting the stove the water heater fired right up. I have now turned off the switch under the sink to see if the electric element is working. "recovery time" for our water heater is 60 minutes. So from cold to hot shower is just that. We use electric if available, never a problem running out of hot water, or a problem with it being only warm.
