Topic: Usable Fresh Water Capacity on 172 Posted: 04 May 2013 at 4:46pm |
A complaint on another small trailer forum about not being able to use all the water in the fresh water tank got me to thinking: do RPODS have a similar problem? So I made some measurements.
First, although the literature advertises a 36 gallon capacity, that consists of 6 gallons in the hot water heater and 30 gallons in the tank. Once the hot water heater is full, fresh water just cycles through the heater. In effect that water no longer counts against the usable capacity in the field. Of the remaining 30 gallons, I measured 15/16ths of a gallon left after the pump ran dry. That mean the usable fresh water capacity is 29 gallons; not bad for a 30 gallon tank. Some space below the pump inlet is good to allow for settling and draining of dirt and sand without damaging the pump or your own internal pipes.
Good job, Forest River!

Sounds about right. A big tip for dry camping is to make sure the water heater is filled before you leave home, otherwise you lose 6 gallons from the start. I only drain mine at the end of the season.

I never go "dry camping" without full everything, including 3 "aquatainers" in the truck.
And medicinal liquids. Never know when a "bad fever" is going to hit..

Totally agree ... it is way worse to run out of medicinal liquids than water.

Love me some strong tomato juice. And grape juice.
