Will it harm my battery if I use it to see if I can fix the water heater myself, by, as suggested, turning the furnace on, etc.?

No harm at all, it was designed to run the 12 volt (propane) side of the water heater while you camp.  It won't run the 120 volt electric element - you must be plugged in for that to work.
