Hello all, I'm new to rv'n, new to this forum, guess I'm just plain new.
We have been looking at a 172 with the usual options, and dealer installed axel risers.and have a few questions. We will be towing it with a 2010 GMS Savana cargo van with a 6 cyl. engine. It has the towing package and a 4400 lb. tow (and cargo) max. With this setup, would a WDH and/or sway control be a good idea? If so, what ones do you recommend? It has one battery, but I was thinking about adding a second. Any opinions? The dealer I'm working with is 3 1/2 hours away so any pick up advice would also be helpful.
Jimbobboy.

By the way, GREAT forum.

Welcome to the forum!!!  I think you'll find most here friendly and very helpful/informative.

However, you brought up the one subject which is of much debate...towing!  It sounds like you're are within your weight capacity in regards to your tow vehicle.  Wind resistance however, seems to be the biggest issue with most.  Some are fine with V6 motors (even some with 4 cyl) - it all depends on how much performance you expect/want while towing.  If you don't already have a hitch, I would suggest at least a Class 3.  Sway bars/weight distribution - some use them, some don't.  I have not and have always been fine.  Others wouldn't go on the road without them.  These devises must be set up properly or they can cause problems.  If you go this route, make sure they show you how to set them up correctly.

This doesn't really tell you much.  This is one of those questions in life that if you ask 10 different people the question, you will likely get 12-13 answers.

The 2nd battery...how much "dry" (no hook-ups) camping do you plan to do?

Again, welcome!

I agree with everything David said. Your setup should work just fine. I tow with a six cylinder and no WDH hitch and have had no problem. The only thing I might add is a transmission cooler if your TV doesn't already have one. Welcome also!!Smile

Welcome.  My previous camper, a popup, required a sway bar.  It was suicide to try to tow it w/o.  It was heavier than the 'pod and should have had a WDH too, but I didn't (I used air bags in the rear springs of my TV).

I towed our 'pod for a year w/o either and it is the most comfortable trailer I've ever towed.  However, a long trip home from the beach this summer convinced me that I should get some sway control, and since I was going that far I might as well get a WDH that included sway control.  As comfortable as the ride was before, the WDH made it 1000 times more comfortable.  So its really up to you - try to tow w/o sway or WDH then decide if you need either or both.

If you will always camp with hookups the battery is really only needed to power the emergency breakaway system.  If you will boondock often, but if you mostly plan to camp on weekends then a 2nd battery is unnecessary.  There are ways around getting a 2nd if you only do one week-long trip a year.  If you boondock more than that, then a 2nd battery is a good idea.

I bought the Equalizer E2, which is the little brother to the original Equalizer.  The weight distribution properties are the same, but the original has 80% more sway control.  I felt I didn't need all that much so I saved some money.
