Okay kids need a little help.
Had to use the furnace the other night.
In the process of winterizing and here a small fan (purge?) behind furnace grate  running that I can't turn off with thermostat. Only way is to kill all power.
Any ideas?  Ouch

Found it!
I had forgotten (thought I did leaving campsite) to turn off water pump.
Turned gas water heater off and though I'd hit the pump too, but no.
It's down in that furnace area and with not water in system it runs constantly. It doesn't sound like it usually does when there is water in the system. It's a soft continuous motor running like may be a purge fan of some sort. Since I don't have a furnace manual (not in all the literature given) i couldn't do much trouble shooting. I don't think the furnace has such a fan. the main van comes on for a bit which probably blows any gas out before the valve opens to light.
Just guessing here as I have no manual.

Are you sure you are not hearing the converter fan? Is it coming from the area of your electrical panel? I'm not sure about the 177. We have th e179, and the converter fan operates when the converter is supplying 12V power. What you are describing sounds more like the converter fan as our furnace does not have a purge motor separate from the main blower.

Thanks but tracked it down to the water pump. Doesn't make much noise when there is no water in the system. My electrical panel is forward port side.

I'll add that since the combustion chamber in the furnace is completely sealed there is no need for something like a bilge fan. Air goes in and exhaust exists on the outside, only.
