When batteries are wired in parallel, the amps are doubled. When wired in series the voltage is doubled.

So you can do dual 12v's OR dual 6v's..

2 12v batteries wired in parallel (positive to positive and negative to negative) still produce 12 volts.  No danger to anything.

By using them in parallel you actually get more total amps out of them, compared to using one and then the other.  With two 100 amp batteries, going to 50% SOC on each you'll get 50 + 50 = 100 amps of usable power.  Put two 100 amp 12 volt batteries in parallel and measure the voltage to get to 50% SOC for the bank, and you'll find you get about 110-120 amps total.  This is due to something called the Peukert Effect if you want to know more.

Ditto above comments from Techntrek. You will get more out of your two 12V batteries by connecting them in parallel and a whole lot less fuss. Connect them like this:

Note that the trailer leads are connected to opposite batteries. The positive of one and the negative of the other. This distributes the load and charge evenly which is important for maximum battery life.

Thank you all for clarifying this.  Will go this route and try it and see how much more I can extend my dry camping time.  All I need to get are a couple of heavy cables to go from + to + and - to -.

You should be able to find suitable cables at any auto parts store. They are not very expensive. The diagram CharlieM provided is a good reference to use when you do get ready to hook them up.

It is my understanding that when wired in parallel, a stronger battery will drain into the weaker one (battery canibalization). And that's a bad thing.
Is this avoidable if you have exactly the same batteries purchased at the same time?

Yes.

Here is the cable I purchased from Amazon. It is an AWG 2/0. Very heavy duty which gives a large margin (overkill maybe) of safety: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078PAL04?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

If you go with the 6v, be aware they are heavier than a typical 12v due to the larger AH capacity (at least the ones I purchased are).

If, as you say, both are exactly the same and purchased at the same time, both SHOULD be in equal condition already. Charge each one fully and check the voltage or take them and have them tested to let you know the condition. If both check out, then you should be okay.

My 2ยข?

Spending money to carry the extra 50lbs for a second battery should be justified by the requirement for more hold over (power storage), otherwise camping on shore power and/or having a good generator are better solutions.

Excess capacity is great, if you use it. Smile
