Topic: Newbie 177 question - water drain and tires Posted: 02 Nov 2015 at 11:54am |
When I bought my used (2011) 177 from the dealer, it showed a full tank of potable water. I want to drain it. I don't know how old that water is and I don't want to be carrying it on my trip in 2 weeks when I will have hookups. But I can't find a drain plug anywhere and I don't have a manual. Do I need to let all the water run through the faucet into the gray tank or is there a plug somewhere I am missing?
My other question is about the tires. They are in great shape visually, manufactured 4010 and 3010, making them a little more than 5 years old. Some people have told me that trailer tires should be replaced every 5 years. Do I need to replace the tires? I am pretty sure they are the originals and I have the HRE. If so, what tires do you recommend for the HRE (and hauling with a Tahoe).
Thanks so much!

You should replace the tires for sure, 5 years is a pretty good Max timeframe.
And on your fresh water tank at the very middle of it under your trailer you'll find the spout where you can twist off the camp to allow all the fresh water to drain.

ah, found the drain. there was a modification done with a valve and I wasn't sure that was it, but it was, so it's draining now!

It sounds like a very convenient modification, and it may never be a problem, but if it sticks down further than just a cap on the pipe, it's something that could get scraped off going over a speed bump, for example. You could end up with no water when you need it and no easy way to fill the tank. The tank itself could even be damaged if the valve is ripped off. Of course I can't see it from here, and you might be fine, but with just a screw-cap on the drain, you can take it off and put it back on by hand, or with a pair of pliers at the most, so the added convenience of a valve is probably of little value. They do have an HRE, so the drain is way farther from the road then ours...

The tire replacement recommendation from Trailer Life Magazine is 6 years, and I've heard that number from other sources over the years. Now at 5 years certainly can't hurt. You should consider replacing the spare, too, but many don't.

If you spend anytime in the Southwest, you want to change the tires every 4 years. The weather & sun is rough on tires & batteries.

It's good the valve is turned sideways like it is. It looks like it might be okay, but, like I said, it's awful easy to just unscrew the cap.
