I wonder if the pump-out schedule is different from older dry well systems and newer sand mound systems.  Mine was built in '86 so has dry wells.  I can't think why they would be different because the septic tank is the same.

PSU's paper sure seems logical.  But ..  Our mitigating factors include being empty-nesters, 1000 gal tank (3 br, 2 ba house), and sugar sand as a base soil (to a depth of several feet in most places).  Point being, it's tough to develop a hard & fast rule that works in all cases.  2-3 years is probably "safe" from a regulatory viewpoint but sure could be burdensome in a lot of cases.

House as built, 3 1/2 baths, 4 bedrooms. Septic tank sized to house/bath ratio. (1500 gallons)

House as lived, 2 adults max, often only one. We had it built in 96, I figure next year I will have it pumped for giggles.

First time we had our septic tank pumped after 5 years...after he was done he told me I probably didn't need to do any more often than 10 years.  There are only two of us and a large tank.

20 also for us .. the first time.  Probably should be 10 from now on.  Family is smaller now.  That makes a difference! Cry

Personally we've never used anything special in our campers or our house (septic system).  Never had a problem anywhere.  Our septic guy even moved us to a 2-year pump-out schedule instead of every year.
