We have a 2015 Pod 177. It was winterized by the dealer. We want to de-winterize it. We believe the water pump is below the bed. We want to remove the mattress, in order to lift the plywood support and change the bypass valve. However, the matress is _very_ stiff, nearly inflexible.

Does anyone have suggestions and/or experience on this matter?

I have had mine out lots of times.. bend and pull.. ours is much stiffer and thicker than the stock mattress.

As a side note, most 177's have the water pump under the sink side of the slide.. also.. there is nothing to do to the water pump when de-winterizing. HOWEVER.. the water heater IS under the bed, and you do need to check and set the bypass valves.

Furpod,

Two questions: You say most of the 177s have the pump under the sink side of the slide. Is this another example of "Let no two pods be built the same?"

Isn't the antifreeze suction hose and associated valve located at the pump? They won't need it until next fall, but since winterization was done by the dealer it might be good to check the valve??

I think it's a function of who did the instal.. But at least once we have seen a 177 or 178 with the pump upside down, on a support brace, between the WH and furnace.. don't know why.. Checking the winterization valve is OK, but if there is an issue, they will know just as soon as they fire up the pump to fill the WH or sanitize.. also.. oddly enough, some pods, of all model numbers, have been built without a winterization valve and hose.. but with a quick disconnect and removable stub hose provided, that attaches straight to the pump at the intake side..

Oh, and as a side side note.. it sounds like you (Utah Pod) have the stock mattress.. I would only pull that out of the pod once.. if it was me. Wink

On a sidesideside note to Charlie.. the "Black Label" mattress in the latest CL builds seems very nice. As the respected elder, and taller dude, I got the bed coming home from Davenport.. Nice firm comfy mattress.. and the couch looked awful to sleep on. But Drew is tough.. and younger. LOL

So I see you pulled rank on Tincan. Good for you. When we ordered our CL we had seen, and expected, the thinner mattress. My wife was ecstatic when the thicker Black Label showed up on delivery. We were just at the right place at the right time. My wife still adds a 2.5" foam topper, but I like the BL just fine.

Hrmmm... I've always been concerned about permanent damage to the mattress frame/coils if I were to remove it.  Besides, all that bending, straining, pushing and shoving to get it out is far too much effort for me.

I simply raise the blinds around the bed up and out of the way.  Then, I lift the mattress up by the edge at the hallway.  I sit down on the plywood and rest the mattress on my shoulders/neck.  I then shift the plywood cover from where it rests over the water heater (I threw away the two screws holding it down long ago - the plywood stays securely in place without them).  Three quick turns and the bypass valves are in position, I slide the plywood cover back in place, stand up, lower the mattress, and drop the blinds back down.  Five minutes from start to end!

Always did it the way Outbound describes, right down to chucking the screws on the cover.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing advice and experience. We will check first under the sink; if not there we will lift the matress, remove and discard the screws, lift the plywood and check there for the bypass valve.
