I need to keep my freezer cold during 10-12 hour days of driving.  Is it safe to run it with propane while driving?  Or should it be on battery?  If so, should frig be switched to propane while stopped for what length of time?   This will be my first real long trip;  usually I get the frig cold, then turn it off while driving and typically don't use the freezer.  Thanks for your help

I run my frig on propane all the time. I start the frig the day before we leave on propane and turn off when we get back to the house. Seems to work great! Also, when you turn on the frig it uses some power to run the computer through out the time its on... Since it's not auto change I didnt want to worry about the source for keeping it cold. Run the fridge on propane. Many tow vehicles are limited in the amperage they can supply to the trailer due to small wiring. The fridge on 12V draws 10 Amps by itself which leaves very little to charge the trailer battery. Running the fridge on propane ensures you will arrive with cold ice cream and a fully charged battery. As for the safety argument, consider that most fridges larger than 5 cu. ft. don't even have the 12V option. They travel quite safely on propane, and you don't have to worry about forgetting to switch from battery to propane when you stop.

Running on propane is no issue.

We do run on 12v when towing the pod, but the Airstream has no such option, just like 95% of the RV's you see/pass on the road. They are all running with warm beer or fridge on propane.. I know how I handle that situation.. Wink

The fridges use of propane is very minimal. Takes 6 weeks or more for it to run through a 20 pound tank..

If you don't use your freezer section, the "freezer" can be removed to give you 20% more fridge space.. look under the bottom, a sliding lock on each side, pull it out if needed or wanted.

+1 to everything said.  I'll add that I wouldn't worry about turning it off at gas stations.  Gasoline vapors are mostly recovered either by on-board vapor recovery systems (all modern cars and trucks have this) or by a system on the fuel pump.  Whatever may escape is heavier than air so it will sink to the ground, while the flame in the fridge is 2 feet higher.  Additionally the slightest breeze will whisk the fumes away anyway, and even if they do find a flame gasoline has a fairly narrow flammability range.  A little too much air or too little and you could take a blowtorch to it w/o a problem.

I echo most all of the above. I ran my Pod a couple of times on 12 volts and it actually discharged the Pod's battery - the TV couldn't charge it enough. My first trip in the Pod was the Rocky Mts. I got there with a half dead battery and was camped in the non-generator section.

You may hear stories of exploding gas pumps when running on propane and anything is possible. We could be hit by a meteor when mowing our laws, too. I usually don't wear a helmet when mowing.

   We always traveled with the refrigerator on 12 volts except when at a rest stop then was switched over to propane. We had the tow package on our tow vehicle with a heavy duty electrical system included. With propane I think that it would keep a colder temp which is helpful if you have ice cream.

I've read lots of discussion on whether it's safe to have propane on while moving and never saw a real compelling argument either way.

What made up my mind was a look at the quick disconnect fitting on the back of my 182G. I didn't want it to turn into a blowtorch if I got rear ended...

With the low flow safety valves on today's propane cylinders it would be closer to those trigger operated butane fireplace lighters.
