Camping World had the Surge Guard 34730 on sale it was replaced by a updated version 34830. I bought the 34730 its portable but I want to install it inside of our camper under the dinette seat. I bought also a 10' 30 amp. cord to use in connecting it. I thought of cutting the 10' cord in half and wiring the female end to the outside 30 amp inlet and the male end to power converter then I would plug in the surge protector. If there is a problem with the surge protector not working I could unplug and plug the two ends of the 30 amp. cord together as long as I feel safe that the incoming power is OK. Does this all make sense? I am a woodworker not electrician, but to me it seems to make sense that it would work with no problem. Does anyone see a problem with this? Thank you

David,
Your concept will work. Just be sure you wire the two loose ends correctly with proper polarity. You should then check your work with one of those cheap three bulb socket testers, which you should have on hand anyway. (This is where I tell you to keep your fingers out of the table saw  ) Make sure you can see the display on the SurgeGuard so you can see if the CG outlets are wired correctly. The SurgeGuard will tell you this. I also like to glance at the display to see how much AC current is being drawn at any time. I find it handy to know when the AC side of the water heater is running or how close I am getting to the nominal 30A limit. But then, I am an incurable techie.  |

Thank you, I will figure it out as I go and I will need to get one of those three light things. My father is no longer alive he would have been very helpful, he was a electrician in the navy during World War 2 and the Korean War. I should of paid more attention when he was doing electrical work around the house.

Make sure you get a NCVT too, if you don't have one yet. 3-light tester and NCVT are must-haves for safety when you plug in at a campground. See the link in my signature, the first link in the list, if you haven't read up on that yet.

Question: waiting on delivery of my R178. Do I need a surge protector. Is that to protect against variable campsite voltages. I'm no electrician, so if I need one, is there one that simply goes between the outdoor AC source and the Pod? Confused.

The answers are yes, yes, and yes. I highly recommend a surge protector as cheap insurance. It protects your electrical and electronic equipment against damage from campground high and low voltage. It also protects you against dangerously miswired or malfunctioning power pedestals. The external models simply plug in between your camper power cord and the CG power pedestal. I personnaly favor:

You can buy one that you plug the pod into, and then plug the surge protector into the power pole. I don't think they are as useful as keeping an eye on the utility voltage, and disconnecting if it gets below 110 volts.
