We just picked a new 179, but had to leave it at the dealers because it was snowing hard, and I didn't want to pull it the first time in a snow storm. We now have a foot so it may be there several days. We are out of the tent trailer now. I have a Honda 1000 generator. Can that work in tandem with a 2000?

Officially Honda and Yamaha say you must match the genset. Reality is if you pair a 1000 with a 2000 and make sure you keep the load below 2000 watts you should be ok. All the "companion" wires do is to link the outputs together so the loads are shared - in this case 1000 watts each. One of the two gensets will sync up its waveform to the other.

A genset is another name for a generator like your Honda.

And a bit easier to type than "generators".

Did I miss something? Why would anyone want to pair a 1000w generator with a 2000w generator to end up with 2000 watts? Why lug the 1000w generator along?

Very true, I was exhausted from a day of chainsawing and that didn't occur to me! Although I could see it still being useful if you had baseline loads you didn't want to interrupt during refueling, need an occasional boost to run an A/C or microwave, and were seriously trying to conserve fuel. Like after a hurricane in Florida. That setup would let you run the 1000 watt genset most of the time, only firing up the 2000 watt genset to run bigger stuff or to shut down the 1000 watt to refuel.
