just curious, where do you keep all your other food? hogone

There are multiple "bear-proof" solutions for backpackers. I have one of the hard-sided solutions but can't remember the name of it right now. Fill it up with food and smelly toiletries and then leave it somewhere away from camp. A downside to all of them is a bear can carry or roll them somewhere else. The soft-sided solutions can leave you with crumbs and crushed cans. They would invite theft by humans in a standard campground. However, it would keep the bears out of your TV or pod.

I did too, until the morning a bear somehow untied our bag (no damage to the line). Luckily for our group it was the last morning so it was just a hungry hike out to the cars. After that I bought a canister.

If its that much of a problem that bears will break into a closed camper, then your only solution is a bear-box (provided by the campground and installed onsite) or slinging your food on a rope over a tree - 15'-20' in the air, at least 5' down from the branch, and preferably at least 100' from your campsite, with an easy escape path into the woods for the bear.

Don't forget that your BBQ will also be a target, so store that well out of the way as well. Again, 100' from your campsite in a spot that the bear will have an easy escape path. The last thing you want to do is startle a bear who's just sniffing around and have him feel trapped.

Oh, and don't forget to hang your toiletries - toothpaste especially, but all soaps and shaving foam and such.

When backpacking, I generally hang the food bag about 200' away from the tent. All the same, I've been woken in the night by a black bear snuffling around the tent and my german shepherd (beside me in the tent) growling.

But, frankly, rely on advice from the campground as far as food storage; they'll know best.

	Any suggestions out there for where to keep dog food while podding with pets as I am concerned with bear problems. I live in the Adirondack mountains and during the summer months if you leave food in your vehicle you will soon be out shopping for a new vehicle.

	AS a newbie have not figured that out. We can stop & buy a limited amount of food but we need to carry the dog food with us as we have two 70 lb dogs with a big appetite. thanks.

	all the years i spent backpacking/canoeing in bear country (northern minnesota), we hung our food in a trees. hogone

	larry158: another curious question? what are all the other campers doing and/or using for food storage? obviously there is a risk with everything, but i would just keep it in the pod. if a bear tries getting in, just wrestle with him!! hogone
