Topic: Dry weight? 2014 178 why heavier 2950lbs?? Posted: 13 Jul 2014 at 3:13pm |
I am about to pull the trigger on a used but near new 2014 RP178. Total weight is important and up until now all the west coast loaded HRE editions have had side stickers indicating dry weight just over 2,800 lbs. I am surprised to see the dry weight sticker indicating a weight of 2,950 lbs and am trying to figure out why this trailer is about 135 lbs heavier than the others I have seen.
I can account for 20lbs with the Rdome that comes with it. I assume the weight on the yellow sticker indicates what the unit weighed at the factory. Am I correct?
Any ideas? The trailer is less than a year old, has the tv up near entrance door.
My concern is due to 3500lb towing capacity that I have.

The pods are weighed at the end of the production line. The one you are looking at must have more options then others you looked at. The others may have been ordered with out microwaves, a/c's etc.
You don't say, but were the others you looked at 178's?

Yes, Same model. the others I looked at had the same equipment except for the Rdome which is 20 lbs. All had microwave, AC, TV, etc.

I have a 178 HRE 2014. The limit on my tv is also 3500#. I have absolutely no problems towing it. Jan

Something to keep in mind with the heavier pods, like the 178, is if your towing capacity is 3500 pounds you should tow with nothing in any of the tanks. You will be pushing your limits as it is, between stuff you load in the pod and stuff in your TV.

Also remember that tow weight limits from manufactures are not definite science. If two different tow vehicles have a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. doesn't mean both will have the same power and performance in towing. A tow vehicle that has a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. may out perform a tow vehicle that has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. I think towing capacity is set by the limits of safety and the stress that engines and transmissions can handle. We had a Saturn view V-6 that had a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. and a Jeep Liberty V-6 with a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. The Saturn out performed the Jeep in power and handling with less sway. Perhaps the strong point with the Jeep was the durability of the engine and transmission to handle 5,000 lbs. but it was slow going and needed to hold on to the steering wheel when large trucks passed.
