The link I posted said that pistols and revolvers can be imported with permission.

Instead of bringing a gun, you can buy bear strength pepper spray which will do the trick in a pinch. On the trip you would want to buy the pepper spray once you got to Alaska, you do not want to bring it through the border either. If you have it , you must declare it and they will take it. So buy it in Alaska and return it if you do not use it. The bear stuff is much stronger that the regular pepper spray carried by police and it will definitely deter a bear if it gets that close.

I think the intent was not only for bear protection.

I would recommend a 12 gauge short barrel shotgun with a mix of slugs and buckshot shells.  My preference would be a 20 inch barrel 870 with an extended mag.  You can't carry concealed but you won't go to jail.

Make sure you have proof of your dogs license and that they have proper and up to date shots. Have crossed many times into Quebec and have never had a problem(as long as I had the proper paperwork). You also should not bring any pocket knives with a spring loaded blade or where the blade can be flipped open or if the blades are over 3 inches.

We digressed some from my introduction. With that said I can tell you from personal experience that pepper spray is a better deterrent than a gun and statistics prove it. Unless you Annie Oakley and you can hit a charging bear between the eyes ( and I bet most of us are not) your only going to make the situation much worse. I have been in close proximity to many bears and the best defense is proper behavior in bear country. Check out some of my bear photos at www.riverclick.com

Thanks for the info regarding transporting spray over the border, I had not considered that.

Any tips on crossing the border with my dog would be appreciated.

THanks!

The post office thing only works with long guns...us common citizens can't do it with handguns.Ouch

The hide it thing has been mentioned to me before-  I'm sure Canada has very nice prisons but I really don't want to chance spending time in oneTongue
I've heard if you are from certain states (cough -South Carolina- cough) they scrutinize for certain things a little harderCry

Welcome and-
Keep us posted on that Alaska trip-  I too am planning the same trip- will take me awhile as I'll be heading there from SC!
As of Jun6 I will be retired!   Can't wait to hit the road, longest trip I've ever done was 19 days and that will be nothing compared to what we are planning.Big smile

My biggest puzzlement right now is how to drive through Canada yet still end up with my firearm of choice when in Alaska, for bear defense of course...
