Pets give us so much, and ask for so little in return. So sorry for your loss. I do understand.

Pets greatly contribute to our lives.  I rescued a cat for Dar a few years ago, and the cat decided I belonged to her.  While I write this she is on the desk next to me, and when I use the mouse her paw is on the back of my hand.  I know that even though I am a dog person I will not know what to do when we loose Tillie.

You and your family are in our thoughts.

As I read these stories I am crying. We lost Panda (black & white Manx cat) this year. He was 14 years old and the only male cat we've owned…we also have 3 female cats.  I think of him often and have even found myself looking for him to come walking up the sidewalk as I pull into the driveway.  We were fortunate that he passed in his sleep one night after a long illness. I miss him everyday, as you will miss Melon everyday. I do take joy in knowing that Panda let us give him a home and I smile when I think of him as you will when you think of Melon.

We have shared our home with quite a few beloved felines over the last 25 years. Their passing always breaks our hearts. Our beloved old Polly was 19 years old when she passed in 2011.  She was deaf and blind, but had the sweetest disposition of any cat I've ever known. She actually went on a weekend camping trip with us in our 177 the summer before she died. She had a wonderful time smelling the smells and feeling the grass under her feet. To date, she's the only cat that's ever camped with us in the Peapod! We have many happy memories of that trip. I know it's been awhile since your original post, but I want to tell you how sorry I am for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss also, and I understand completely.
My 2nd wife and I have been together 12 years and we have lost 3 dogs in that time, only one from old age when it was expected.

The Rainbow Bridge-

We had a lab/chow mix that quit eating, it turned out she had eaten a sock and blocked her intestines.  The GP vet we used back then didn't figure out what was wrong in time.
Jazz had two surgeries from him that were less than successful.

Then we ended up at a specialty clinic who managed to fix the intestinal problem but by then her kidney's had completely failed.

After the euthanasia, as we left,  it had just stopped raining.
There was a beautiful rainbow above the clinic-  we knew she was already there waiting.

It has been several years and I still tear up every time I think about it.

Sorry to hear of your loss, too.  Making that final decision is so hard.  I can't imagine having to make the decision to remove life support from a loved one (human).
