Got a really D'uh question to ask regarding battery care.  Not going camping for a few weeks and pulled the battery tonight to hook it up to a motomaster Eliminator battery charger.

Instructions say to use a 60 cm 6-guage (awg) insulated battery cable to a negative battery post.  Then two steps later connect the negative  black clip from the battery charger to free end of cable.  So basically, Hook the negative battery clamp to another wire connected to the negative battery post.  Does everyone do this?  Is it totally necessary?  Figured that I could just clamp the red to +ive and black to -.
Sorry for the dummy question.

It sounds as if they want to make sure if there is a spark it will be away from the battery. Batteries produce hydrogen gas and have caused explosions when people hook up jumper cables. If the battery is no in a confined space the probability is small, but real.

Forget about using the intermediate cable.  Connect the battery charger exactly as you mentioned.  Once connected, turn on the charger and there is no danger of sparking.

By the way, why did you remove the battery to charge it?

It's more of a maintenance for the battery as I won't be using the trailer for weeks and eventually winterizing and have read that the battery will slowly discharge over time with items that continuously draw power when not in use. Bought an Eliminator intelligent multistage charger 6/4/2amp. Just some preventative maintenance.

If all you want to do is remove all load on the battery just remove the pos lead at the battery.

You can just leave it in-place and disconnected, but be sure to charge it overnight once per month.

Thanks a lot.  We keep it stored on someone elses property with basically no security but a decent neighbourhood.  Just read a story somewhere about an Rpod owners battery being stolen multiple times, so I don't mind lifting it out.  Will do the charge monthly to keep it alive.  Was going to put it on a trickle charge over the winter but probably not necessary.
