What a long hibernation this country has had Winter 2012/ Spring 2013 ... To you all on the EAst Coast and Midwest - hope the snow & winds & ice have finally ended :) We've been catching up on posts from the last 4-5 months, and I must say that the BC'ers and those that have traveled north across the border have peaked our interest ... So... a couple of questions for those travelers that have gone before us : does the rpod need to have different or more insurance paperwork because it will be traveling 'international' ... How expensive are the ferries to get across to Vancouver Island... And finally, what kind of health papers do the 3 pups need... Thanks, all L & W

Here ya go:
Dogs and CatsFor a dog or cat 12 weeks or older, you must have a signed health certificate from a licensed veterinarian clearly describing the animal and declaring that it is healthy and currently vaccinated against rabies. To enter the U.S. the shot must have been given at least a full month before your trip and the certificate should include the expiration date of the shot. If the date is not included, the shot must be refreshed every year for the United States, and every 36 months for Canada. Canada does require the 30 day lead time – the shot qualifies from the moment it is given. So I guess you have to have the above for each pet. Terry |

It's been some time since I've taken the ferries to Vancouver Island, so I can't help you with the prices. But you have a few choices on which ferry route you take. The BC ferries leaving just south of Vancouver at Tsawassen is a very enjoyable trip through the channel islands. The views are great and once we were on a ferry that had to be stopped to let a pod of killer whales pass--breath taking! The WSDOT ferry run from Pt. Angeles to Victoria is pretty bland and sometimes a little rough. I got a little seasick once. If you're coming up the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, the Pt. Angeles run is the most logical choice. A third route choice, like Tsawassen, close to the I5 corridor leaves from Anacortes and winds through the San Juan Islands. This is another nice trip. Victoria is a wonderful city to visit, with lots of stuff to see and do. We've only camped at commercial R/V parks in Victoria, and haven't yet done any of the wilderness parks on Vancouver Island.

Don't forget your own "papers" along with the dogs. You won't be getting back in to the good ole' USA without current passports!

You can also get passport cards, which are cheaper.

3DogPod (or anyone). If you have any questions about Vancouver Island I've been a local resident for 20+ years and am happy to answer any questions.
If you are okay with dry camping, our provincial camp sites are pretty nice (and affordable) and there is a great site for booking on-line. https://secure.camis.com/Discovercamping/ My first outing was to China Beach and is an amazing spot with access to some great beaches and hikes.

You can find Ferry schedules and fares at bcferrys.ca Check with US border for info on pets. Sometimes they ask other times no. Best to be safe with shots up to date, for pets, not humans, lol
Have fun
