Picked up our 171 yesterday, and overall things went fairly smoothly for the first trip with it.  77 miles home to the storage center averaging 10.4 mpg over hilly terrain and wind in my face, so I'm okay with that.  Haven't towed anything in almost 30 years now, so it seemed like forever for me to actually pull out of the dealer and onto the highway that they are on ... am pretty sure I heard them snickering from inside.  Embarrassed  But, better safe than sorry.  Felt good after about 10 miles in and relaxed some, and when we pulled off for lunch and into a shopping center there were no pangs of anxiety.  Stopped by home first so that Comet could take a sniff around inside, and then over to where we are storing it.  Only took us 20 minutes to get it settled in for a couple weeks stay (including pulling the battery and locking it away inside so it isn't as easy to steal) so not bad for our first time ... wife was very impressed with how quickly it went.

Couple of pics from the day -- first is at the dealer with our 171 and TV.  Don't know why the back door is open.  Second is Comet seeming to enjoy his first chance at checking out the bed!

Congrats guys...the new rig looks great.  Can't wait to see you guys again and this time you can give us a pod tour!!!

One quick observation-your safety chains: you should cross them.  Hook the left one on the right side of the hitch and the right chain on the left side of the hitch.  That way if the tongue pops off, the chains will form a cradle and help keep it from dragging the ground.  You should also 'twist' the chains before hooking them so as not to have too much slack in the chains.  Just enough to make turns.

Camper Bob is right about the matress.  We got one of those thick memory foam toppers at Wal-Mart and did away with the matress.  Really works for us.

Rex - Thanks!
Camper Bob - on our list for Christmas (going to be our gift to each other).

Bill - We found that out as soon as we got home and our neighbors started coming out & over!

Iams - Can't wait to see you both again also!  Thanks for the tip on the chain ... I remember that now from my days of towing a tent trailer back in the early 80's but to be honest I didn't even think about it since the dealer was the one who hooked it all up for us.

I kept my mattress, but got a memory foam one at Walmart to put on it and works for me. I have had motorcoaches and tents. It might not be a Sealy, but it is not the ground in a sleeping bag! Have camped with my one dog, now have a 6 month old puppy in addition, going last of Oct. for his first camping trip.
Happy podding!
