That might explain the breakage, but part of the problem, I believe, was that it got wet and shrank. Combination of human error and cheap part.

I thought the part in the middle was a "button" (push down) and not a "lever" (pull up)?

It was just on so tight that there was not enough "give" to get enough loose to disengage the strap from the buckle. It was exactly as pictured here but when we tried to lift up on the buckle, the "lip" broke off and all that is left is the teeth area. After bandaids and triple antibiotic to fingers, we still don't have it up and will need a needle nose pliers to get it off.

Tusten Traveler,
What is it about the strap on your tank that makes it difficult to remove? Mine has a buckle (as is pictured in an earlier post in this thread) that can be undone and redone without a problem. Did your dealer install a different type of strap (from the one pictured)?

I hate that strap. I actually still have not been able to get it off and I know my tank is near empty
As I don't want to go to dual tanks, what have others done to better secure the tank the unit comes with while allowing for ease of access to change?

Hi folks.
We just got back today from our third trip with our 171. I went to pull the propane tank to have it filled and found that both the metal straps had broken (and been broken for some time judging by the corrosion on the surfaces of the break. Our R-pod had the nylon strap installed when we purchased it, however it obviously didn't prevent the metal strap from still failing. This issue needs to be addressed immediately. The last trailer that Linda and I had a few years ago had a propane tank break loose on us and go under the trailer and punch a hole in the tank. Thank God it was on a secondary highway at the time, and that a spark didn't set off the propane that leaked out. We had some other issues as well. I'll post a new thread on those. Doug |

Yes, the service bulletin calls for it to go over the tank directly.

Our dealer put the strap over the vinyl cover of the single tank. I wonder if I should put it over the tank instead, like above?

On the 171 I have ordered (Due to pickup at the end of the month) I'm having the dealer remove the single holder and they are installing a Dual Propane Holder for me. They are also putting on a regulator that will control both bottles and I will be able to use 20 or 30 LB bottles. The strap across the bottle IMHO just looks cheap. Plus over time will dry rot and snap. |
