I hope all you folks in Virginia and nearby are doing OK.  I haven't hear of any injuries or deaths but, there does seem to be damage in areas.

I hope so, too! Up here in central New Jersy we got a little bit longer roll, more like 45-60 seconds. No damage but a little scary as the walls went one way and the floor the other. All seems well though.
Be swishes to you in Virginia and North Carolina!

I was on the phone at work and told the client that I will have to call him back the building was shaking...I was a bit confused at first as we don't have real earthquakes in Virginia afterall.  I thought a semi truck had hit the building ---that has happened before.  lol.
I have lived here for 45 years and this is the first one that I have ever felt.  It was short but scary while it was happening.  I know that it would haven't been too exciting for those on the west coast but we are more used to hurricanes (and may see some of Irene too).
I feel bad for the people in the Pentagon ( about 20 miles north of me).  They had to think that they were getting hit again by terrorists again.   Government offices were shut down and that created havock on the rodes as everyone left town at the same time.   It seems to be mostly minor damage and I haven't heard much in the way of injuries but I can't say that I watched the news.   We kept on working afterwards as normal.
Apparently had a 4.8 aftershock about 45 minutes ago but didn't feel that one.
Ok, earthquakes, hurricanes, end of the world coming (I am told in 2012), oh my.    If I knew that was the case for sure, I would just go camping forever.  lol

Scared the crap out of us, they evacuated our building and then sent us home.  That was 45 minutes after we had been evacuated due to a small fire.  I think we were back in the building for 20 minutes between the two.  I'm part of the crew that assists with evacuations so it was a stressful afternoon.

Now the hurricane is supposed to go right overhead on Sunday.  Brin, I think you are on to something.

Not to tempt the gods, but I've lived in the L.A. area for 11 years, and I find it strange that you folks yesterday experienced a larger earthquake than I've ever felt here. The largest I've sat through is a 5.6.

It was felt over a very large area.  As far south as Atlanta, GA.  Pretty much all the states from GA straight north and east all the way.

It seems to me that the worst known quake in the US was in that fault line.  Way back in time.
