Topic: Broken window latch Posted: 20 May 2011 at 11:08am |
On our first trip out with the new pod we discovered that the latch was broken on one of the windows next to the bed. It's permanently unlocked (I guess better than permanently locked). The latch itself is intact, but the thumb lever is completely broken off so you can't grab anything. At first I thought it would be easy to replace, but after closer inspection it's riveted to the window. I could drill it out, but I'd rather not. Has anyone replaced a latch like this before? Where would I get the replacement part? Does that window pane come out of the frame, or would I need to work on it in place? Thanks in advance for your help.

A new R-POD? Why wouldn't you take it back to the dealership for service? Issues like this are exactly what a trailer warranty is all about.

The dealer is 5 hours away, so if it's a cheap part and only takes a few minutes I'd rather do it myself.

Then I would call your dealer and ask him to ship you a new latch. If he gives you grief then call Forest River, I'm sure they'll send you one.

I agree with techntrek ask the dealer or Forest River to mail you a new latch. I would call Forest River first, you might get it faster. David

I emailed Forest River on Monday and they got back to me Tuesday saying they'd "be more than happy to send out a replacement latch". They even knew my shipping information already just from my name. So far I'm impressed with the service.

A few weeks after my email exchange with Forest River I got a call from my dealer saying they had a replacement window for me and they weren't sure how to get it to me. I explained that I was expecting just a latch and that it was supposed to come directly to me. They also knew where the window was located, which I had never told anyone. I think that maybe someone at the dealer had noticed the bad latch during the inspection and already ordered the replacement window (without my knowledge). We went back and forth on the phone a few times and that very same day my latch arrived by UPS at my house (total coincidence). I called the dealer back and told them about the latch and they sent the window back. Overall both the dealer and forest river were very friendly in the matter, but there was definitely a communication breakdown somewhere. I had to drill out the old rivets to remove the bad latch and install new pop rivets for the new latch (they sent the latch and matching black pop rivets). I was a little scared the *Pop* might shatter the glass since the rivets were so large, but luckily it worked perfectly.
