I had the same idea! I permanently added some tacky lights to our awning last year. I found some solar powered outdoor garden lights at WalMart. I saved the solar panel for another project, and hooked the lights up to two rechargable AA batteries. Here's a picture of our R-POD that I took last night: A closeup of the lights this morning: Using some heavy duty thread, I knotted the LED outdoor lights into the valence on our awning. I used a needle to attach the thread to the existing stitching (I didn't sew through the awning material.

I am SO tempted but 1) the area is full of "firefly" invasion,2)I leave in four days, flying out to Austin, will return at the end of June, SO looks like July (and guess what, the 4th of July is a zoo around here. EVERYONE is out that can get out Best I can do is second week in July and I am burning daylight.
I have to do better than this next year if I am going to get any use out of the Escape Pod. In the meantime I am experimenting with the scraps of awning to see if I can do graphics. I have used artist acrylic and seems to be doing very well. Dried well and I have it folded (as we do when putting away) and so far has not flaked. Have not put it to the "rain" test, will do that maybe tomorrow by putting it out under the sprinkler. I hope those that could get out last weekend had a good time, we stayed holed up, but local campgrounds were packed.

Morning pictures of awning vinyl. I have the UP side (light color) on the propane cover, so you can see the difference in shades. This is the Moonlight. Dark side you can see the "canvas" grain

This is a scrap of the awning material, light might be better in the morning. The white side (up side), the taupe side the underneath on mine.

I am getting antzy wanting to try my awning out and on. got a 2 step stool today, only gives me a boost on the first few feet on the downslop channel each end, but if I can get the awning started in the channel I guess (hope) I can move the stool a few feet at a time and guide it through the groove. Hope where there is a will , there is a way Have some twinkle lights I want to add too so I can look like a Tennessee road house.
But not until last part of June as it looks now. The pictures are really good. If it cools down I will be spreading the awning out and taking some closeups of what the material looks like

Our popup is like you describe, on the dinnette slide-out and the bed ends, with the vinyl on the outside, canvas on the inside. |

It is vinyl instead of plastic. And upon looking at how it is made, the vinyl side goes UP. I am told that tents with side beds? have this material on the top. It is a heavy duty material and well made. Will lay it out in my driveway when the weather cools down a bit and take pictures of both sides. Will have to wait to put it on the Pod since it will reach out into a poison ivy patch if I set it up.

I could not think of the word, not plastic, but vinyl.
Is so hot now that I will not be putting it out until we get a cool down, at least in the 80's. I will not be able to put it on the Pod because the poles would be in the poison ivy but I will lay it out in the driveway and take pictures of both sides.
When I do get out camping I will take pictures of it on the Pod |
