Hello All

Still looking for a 180. Found a good used 180 that has the Rdome ready lining. Well, the better half hates the Rdome. We just want to pull into camp and open the awning in 30 seconds.

The question is not if.....but has anyone added an awning to a Rdome ready Rpod? We are look in g for a 180 length awning. Im thinking the used Rpod180 + an aftermarket awning would be cheaper than a newer one

Forest River told me that the Tule awning could only be put on a Pod that had reinforcement built in at the factory for it.  I don't know if all this year's pods are so prepared or if it has to be ordered with an awning.

My dealer told me about a year ago, you cannot get a pod with both the awning and the dome. Like anything, that can change with the next run on new units, but at that time you couldn't.

The awning pods have a reinforced wall the dome pods don't. Not compatible.

If you are an experienced RVer, ok, but if not, it may be a mistake to just write off the r-dome. It has it's drawbacks, like flimsiness, but it is much better than any awning in wind or rain or bug country, in my opinion.

That said, any big strong nylon tarp with grommets can be rigged to slide thru the keder rail of the r-pod with 'sail slugs' and it does the job of an awning quite well. Proper length tent poles and ropes attached to big tent stakes keep the outside corners anchored, I have whittled plugs that insert into the ends of the keder rail to keep the tarp anchored there with short lengths of nylon cord.

There are other solutions that you may be able to find using the extended 'search' mode of the forum (altho it's pretty pathetic).

For our style of travel, the awning makes much more sense than an R-Dome. We started out with an R-Dome ready 179, but when it went to the factory for repair, the side was replaced with the reinforced one and I was able to get a Thule awning added. I would not recommend that way of getting one though. Before we got the Thule awning, I had made an awning that slid into the track and used plastic poles for support along with concrete filled coffee cans with eye bolts for hold-down ropes. There are pictures in my mods of how I did that one. The hardest part was figuring out how to make brackets to hold the lower edge of the supports and then welding and bending them followed by some grinding the back so they would clear the screws in the lower track.

If you have questions re r-pods, this is the place for them.

Just the usual helpful submissions, no rants present.

I didn't see any ranting. The dome isn't for everybody.. (I say that, in the moderator spirit, because everyone knows in their heart, the DOME is HOME!! )

The whole point of this group is discussion and help. If you ask a question, needing help.. you will get discussion.

Many owners have gone to a slide in, home made or purchased awning. You have to do what works for you. Many owners now have the CLAM, which, in some situations, is a better choice then a dome OR an awning, because it doesn't attach to the Pod..
