I've got a marine porthole that opens to the inside and if I ever put our Pod under water I'm sure no water will get in through it. There are some problems with the marine porthole, one of which was pointed out by mcarter.
The porthole is secured closed by two hand star nuts that are about 1 1/2" in diameter. They fit between the screen door and the hard door, but only barely. They do press against the screen, but not enough to cause a problem. Marine portholes swing up to open and the bolts and hand star nuts drop down out of the way. You can buy screens for them, but it really isn't necessary since the screen door functions as a screen when in the open position. One of the biggest problems with window flange is about just long enough to fit through, but just barely. When you tighten down the ring flange which goes around the outside of the window, it is just barely covers the window flange, leaving a flush surface, but you end up compressing the door a bit to get a good seal. After installing mine, I developed a horizontal crack on the surface of the inside of my door centered on the porthole. It doesn't hurt anything, but it indicates that there was some stress that had to give. If I had it to do over again, I'd have bought the window from the supplier mentioned in this thread, but at the time, I didn't know about them. |

They do make portholes that open. Mostly for nautical use. The issue I saw was they open to the inside. Which means it would interfere with the screen on your door. One could make a screen for it, but it doesn't seem practical for door use.

How do you like your porthole? Can you see out good? Do they make one of those that opens?

I bought mine from Vintage Technology, it opens and is screened, easy to put in and comes with a rubber seal, peep hole made no sense as the screen door is in the way. Amazon sells the same window at a much higher price. I like the fact I can open a small screened widow in door. My 2 cents.

I would like to get some good advice. I'm thinking of putting in a door window on my 171. Which is the best option? I went to Lowe's today and bought a peephole but I hesitate to put it in, because I don't know if I can get my eye right up to the door because of the screen. There is already a window right next to the door, so I don't need air or light. I just want to be able to see who it is if some-body comes a knockin. Maybe the porthole type? Open type or not?

I'm curious how you like your porthole door window. I'm considering putting in one but debating which one. I have a little peephole now from Lowes, thinking if I drill that hole and if I don't like it I can go to the one like you. How do you like yours? I just want something to see who might be at the door. The window on my 2016 171 is right next to the door and lets in enough light. D id you opt for one that doesn't open? How is the view looking out? Is it dark that you can't see in?

+1 to SH, I kept my cut out and use it to test fasteners.

Very well could be aluminum framing around door, from build videos I have seen there is. But there is no aluminum frame inside of door, the door will be solid and permit your install. You Tube has videos that show RPod builds and give you idea of what the framing looks like. When I installed my widow from Vintage Tech I encountered no framing in the door.

Mine did not have a horizontal brace. I have the cut-out still and there is only the foam.
