Hello fellow Podders. As I can only dream and plan trips at the moment. One of the final mods I'm considering is adding the window into the door. Could those of you who have done so already be so kind and help me out with few questions I have.

Which method did you use for cutting the hole? Jig saw or router?

Even after tapping the cut lines how much chipping happened on the exterior finish?

Where did you find the window? I'm having trouble locating one other than amazon.

Thanks for the help everyone. Happy Camping!

1. A jigsaw.
2. None.
3. Amazon -- a marine porthole that opens.  You can get it at marine supplies but it is more costly.  RV places have round windows, but I found none that open.
Be sure to measure the door thickness [take out the lock set to do it] and check to see that the flange on the window is not too big or small.

1. Jig Saw but be very careful that your blade is perfectly perpendicular to the base plate.
2. I taped over both the outside and inside. I cut from the inside so that any chipping would be toward the inside. I used a very fine-toothed blade. Make sure it is long enough to go all the way through, even when it is on the upstroke.
3. Amazon. It seems to be the only source available.

You can see mine by checking my mods.

1. Also a jigsaw
2. very small amount, hidden under window flange.
3. Amazon, round porthole RV window that doesn't open.
3A. Contact http://www.teardroptrailerparts.com, he has just what you need..

There will be TONS of styrofoam bits.. pre-start your screws before placing the parts in the door.. measure eight times, cut once..

+1 to Furpod. I used a jigsaw, go slow and tape both sides. I made a template from cardboard, and ensured it fit window. I used the WD06 window from Vintage Technologies (teardroptrailerparts.com), which is the same window Amazon sells at a fraction of price. That window is screened and opens.

I had good luck with the tear drop trailer place  Frankbear007@gmail.com  Phone 517 741 5000. Drill a hole before starting with the jigsaw.   Take the door off and lay on sawhorses.  Save the piece somewhere if you ever need to repair something.  Frank knows about Rpods even tho he builds tear drop trailers.

I also ordered my window from Vintage Technologies, Frank Bear, and it arrived within a week. WD-06 14” x 21” just like the ones on the 2017 and 2018 models. I am going to have a local RV dealer install my window, but Frank said he will answer any questions one might have if you install yourself. Plus my total price was quite a bit less than it would have been from Amazon. Highly recommend!Smile

I got my window on Amazon, I like the fact that it opens. I had no chipping at all on the fiberglass.
I would go with the router if you can. I used a jigsaw and figured any damage to the fiberglass would be minimized by the cut pulling the fiberglass up into the Styrofoam backing so I cut from the inside. To my horror I discovered the blade wandered outwards on the corners, and the frame barely covered the opening on the outside. I used a heavy bead of caulk and haven't had any leaks, but if I did it again I would cut from the outside, or go with a router.
Also, remove the door, it is easy to do and is very light and easy to handle. It is a lot easier working horizontal than vertical!

That is why I cut very tightly to my template with the jigsaw. I figured it would be easier to enlarge the opening as needed rather than trying to fill in a cut that was too large.

I do have one additional question folks. When I inquired about a window with my dealer at the rv show today he mentions that some older models (couldn't confirm which model year) that there was a horizontal  brace above in the door around the window level and that removing it could warp the door. Can anyone confirm this? (StephenH I'm looking to you sir because I believe we have the same model year)

Mine did not have a horizontal brace. I have the cut-out still and there is only the foam.

Very well could be aluminum framing around door, from build videos I have seen there is. But there is no aluminum frame inside of door, the door will be solid and permit your install. You Tube has videos that show RPod builds and give you idea of what the framing looks like. When I installed my widow from Vintage Tech I encountered no framing in the door.

I'm curious how you like your porthole door window. I'm considering putting in one but debating which one. I have a little peephole now from Lowes, thinking if I drill that hole and if I don't like it I can go to the one like you. How do you like yours? I just want something to see who might be at the door. The window on my 2016 171 is right next to the door and lets in enough light. D id you opt for one that doesn't open? How is the view looking out? Is it dark that you can't see in?

I would like to get some good advice. I'm thinking of putting in a door window on my 171. Which is the best option? I went to Lowe's today and bought a peephole but I hesitate to put it in, because I don't know if I can get my eye right up to the door because of the screen. There is already a window right next to the door, so I don't need air or light. I just want to be able to see who it is if some-body comes a knockin. Maybe the porthole type? Open type or not?

I bought mine from Vintage Technology, it opens and is screened, easy to put in and comes with a rubber seal, peep hole made no sense as the screen door is in the way. Amazon sells the same window at a much higher price. I like the fact I can open a small screened widow in door. My 2 cents.

How do you like your porthole? Can you see out good? Do they make one of those that opens?

They do make portholes that open. Mostly for nautical use. The issue I saw was they open to the inside. Which means it would interfere with the screen on your door. One could make a screen for it, but it doesn't seem practical for door use.

I've got a marine porthole that opens to the inside and if I ever put our Pod under water I'm sure no water will get in through it.  There are some problems with the marine porthole, one of which was pointed out by mcarter.

The porthole is secured closed by two hand star nuts that are about 1 1/2" in diameter.  They fit between the screen door and the hard door, but only barely.  They do press against the screen, but not enough to cause a problem.

Marine portholes swing up to open and the bolts and hand star nuts drop down out of the way.  You can buy screens for them, but it really isn't necessary since the screen door functions as a screen when in the open position.

One of the biggest problems with window flange is about just long enough to fit through, but just barely.  When you tighten down the ring flange which goes around the outside of the window, it is just barely covers the window flange, leaving a flush surface, but you end up compressing the door a bit to get a good seal.  After installing mine, I developed a horizontal crack on the surface of the inside of my door centered on the porthole.  It doesn't hurt anything, but it indicates that there was some stress that had to give.

If I had it to do over again, I'd have bought the window from the supplier mentioned in this thread, but at the time, I didn't know about them.

Finally got around to the window in the door, Got the window on Ebay and it came with a
pull down blackout shade. Taped it , marked it, drilled pilot hole, cut with jigsaw, installed it.
Took an hour, Thanks for the tips!!

And then my wife says, "but you have to go all the way outside and then close the screen door then pull the shade and then open the screen door go back inside and shut the door?... huh"

How about cutting a hole in the screen and making a velcro secured flap that you can open and close from the inside? 🙃

or search this, RV ENTRY DOOR WINDOW FRAME TINTED WINDOW PLEATED SHADE LCI

MEASUREMENT: CUTOUT 15 3/16" X 24 3/16"

These windows are $99 with free shipping.

I got this one because this is what she wanted, To be able to see out and then still have privacy.

They came off a bunch of new, mis manufactured doors, they are NOT perfect brand new, still inbox windows.
I was a little disappointed because there were a few small, Light, scratches on the glass and frame, and the frame had a small sun-bleached spot, (Mostly Rubbed out ok).
But once it was installed it looked as good as the other windows, and I can only see the minor scratches when I am cleaning the window. (you get what you pay for).
All in all worked out well. The frame and trim are plastic.

Look at the bright side.  If the window was in perfect condition when installed, it probably wouldn't match the other windows in your Pod.  Now it looks like an original.

If you figure out a practical way to get at the window without having to open the door, be sue to post it.  We have the same access issue with our marine porthole, though it's small enough that no curtain is really needed.

Seems like any window in the door would have the same issue WRT the screen door. So I don't know if this is an actual "problem" or not. If there was a way to have an openable/removable section in the screen door, then this could be dealt with. However, almost any "solution" that I can conceive seems to be more trouble than the original problem.

Here's a few tips ,or things i figured out about the install and from from others who posted.
1. Yes there will be tons of styrofoam bits everywhere, I did the install with the door mounted and put a sheet over the screen and bits still got in the pod and covered everything within a 25' radius of the pod.
2 I also used a fine tooth blade and made sure it was a long one.
3. I cut from the outside, the blade will wander ,go slow and don't force the corners or it gets worse.
4. After I did the cut out I used a large file to shave down the cut out wanders, and then a 60 grit sandpaper on both the outside fiberglass and inside plastic veneers to fine tune the opening.
5. Large bead of silicone on the frame, which gave me a nice squeeze out bead . And then I carefully cut it off after it dried.
Pretty east install if your handy at all.
