Just had another incident of a person selling something on Craig's List shot and killed. This guy was a former police officer selling a late model Camaro and had agreed to meet at a county location, a gas station. Some thugs out of Nashville shot him and stole the car. Criminals will pick an easy mark, not the first time this has happened. Craig's list doesn't have enough parameters to keep you safe.

There was another Craigslist story a couple of weeks ago about a guy selling a camera, somewhere in or around Nashville.  The buyer took the camera and drove off without paying.  The seller chased him and ended up getting shot.  I hope these stories are more about Craigslist than about Nashville.

I've had good experiences with Craigslist.  So far....

What people are doing for Craigslist are Safe Trade Stations. A safe place to go to trade with someone you don't know.

Any classified ad sale presents risks.  Since Craigslist is the biggest our there, it is necessarily going to have more incidents.  Though I've purchased and sold a number of things on Craigs list and have never had a problem, I always try to be cautious.  For small stuff, it's probably better to meet inside a public place such as a bank, a restaurant, or best yet a police station [though I doubt they'd be very accommodating].  For stuff that is registered with the state, such as a vehicle, my practice is to settle the actual transaction inside a bank.  That way you can either receive or have issued a cashier's check without fear of forgery or someone grabbing it and running like they can with cash, there is plenty of space to sit and sign title documents and such and there is minimal risk that the buyer/seller can do something strange.

I fell for a scam for a Casita listing on Craigslist. That is how I ended up with our RP-179. My wife and I are much happier with the R-Pod than we would have been with a Casita. Still, it was an expensive lesson in not falling for something that would seem to be a good deal without some means of verification and eyes-on. The so-called "escrow" was part of the scam.
The perpetrator(s) may laugh now, but there is a Judge before whom he/she/they will stand that won't accept the excuse that it was only a "rich American" who could afford it anyway.

I forgot earlier that I got my Pod on Craigslist.  I'm not defending CL, and I'm really sorry about your deal gone bad -- you posted details of it recently -- but there are good deals to be had.

I've only conducted one transaction on CL and it went smoothly. I sold my two Ryobi 2200 generators to raise cash toward the purchase of two Honda EU2000is. Appropriately, we met in a Home Depot parking lot during the day. I demonstrated that the generators ran before cash changed hands; I even plugged in a load.

The important thing to remember is..

Thousands and thousands of CL transactions happened the same day, and they all went fine and well.

Good point, Furpod. Not preaching paranoia, just being careful. Sure this guy with the car knew 1000 times this goes right. He was a police officer, so sure he was confident. He's dead now. Not about the 1000 rights, it's about the one wrong, if it's you. Last year the site passed 100 murders and there is an active site that tracks crime on Craig's List.
