 Calendar Event: 2017 rpod 179Posted: 28 Aug 2017 at 12:51pm |

We have a new 2017 rpod 179 that we pull with a GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 v8. The trailer is constantly fishtailing 4 to 5 inches with any wind or uneven road conditions. It is not heavily loaded when we travel. Has anyone experienced this condition and found a remedy for it ?

Are you using Weight Distributing Bars and Sway bars? They make a world of difference. Also make sure that any weight you ARE carrying in the POD is in the front end near the hitch. Check your tires. Low air will do this. And - of course - don't speed. |

Try filling your fresh water tank, the 179 trailers better with a full fresh water tank.

I cant help, my 172 totally stays put behind me, ive never seen it move even an inch. I dont have anywhere near the T.V. you have, i tow with a Nissan Frontier 6 cyl, but i do use WDH. That might be the difference, also, i have carlisle radial tires and make sure they are at 65 p.s.i. frequently.

A sway bar would help immensely, that is all I use. I do not have a WDH, not with a 1500 chevy and a Pod.

That said, you may have the weight distributed incorrectly or some other thing. I would first weigh the R-pod, and the tongue weight and make sure you're within normal limits. The R-179 should weigh between 2,800 and 3,800 pounds, with "about" 10% (280-380 lbs) on the tongue. Depending on how the rig is loaded, the tongue weight could be as much as 15% (420-570 lbs). So to rule of thumb it, expect ~~ 300-550 lbs on the tongue. If you're outside of that zone, then you may just need to move things around. If you're inside that zone, then you might very well consider a WDH, or anti-sway, or both. We pull our R-179 with a Fastway E2 WDH which provides mild anti-sway in addition to the weight distribution, and we see zero sway or fishtailing. The F-150 and the R-179 go down the road as a "unit". No excitement.

Bama, I believe you nailed it. The tongue should be level or slightly tilted down toward the front of the pod. With your pick up it may be 'nose up.' You can easily remedy that by getting a draw bar for your ball that has a drop so that your pod will sit level when hitched to your pickup. When I have ours hooked up to our '94 F-150 I needed a hitch bar that had a 4" drop to make it sit level. With my '13 Explorer, the hitch only has a 1" drop.

The shank is the part that fits into the receiver. The hitch is bolted to the shank. There are lots of shank sizes available in one inch increments to enable you to tow with the rpod as level as possible.
Our Expedition uses a 7 inch drop shank in order to make the pod level. We use an Equalizer 4 way WDH and love it. Vann
